That’s a tough headline to follow, for sure! But I gotta get this out to all of you! YOUR PYC RACING SAILORS are off to a great season, and the entire membership can feel proud of this. YOUR YACHT CLUB is a fantastic spot for food, drinks, and camaraderie. In fact, OUR MANAGEMENT, GROUNDS, and MEMBER EXPERIENCES have never been better. And now … OUR RACING PROGRAM is showing great performance, and the table is set for continued advancement across the board !! At every type of competition and class of boats in which our sailors compete, we are competitive and challenging for outright wins. Your Capdevielle team is currently in 2nd place for the season (with more events left to go) and several individual racers have won, or made the podium, in offshore races from here to Tampa. YoungGil Hackel just took SECOND at the Opti World Championship in Lake Garda, Italy. Your FISH racers, led by DJ (David Johnson) dominate the podium in that class. And, quite happily, your PYC will field anall-women’s team for the upcoming GYA Knost Regatta in Pass Christian, MS. One of our newest members, Emily Wright, will be joining that team. (See Vice Commodore’s article, Page 4) This team is going to surprise the competition because we have a “ROCK STAR” team composed of Commodore Emeritus Nikki Ferry, long-time sailor Rachael Gillette, Soledad Travado, Helen Welch, Emily Wright, and Lianna Noon. They will be formidable, and they are our first such Knost team since 2004 !!! Summertime is blasting away, and your Summer Sailing Camps have been very well attended. In fact, over 400 kids will have gone through our PYC Sailing Camp this summer - and Sailing Director Travado has multiple plans for 2022 already ! As you know, summer comes with high temps, rain, and lingering humidity. Your Club has installed an array of devices to combat, not only the humidity in the Club, but to defend against airborne pathogens … the things that spread diseases such as the Flu and COVID-19. Next time you are inside, take a moment to notice what the air smells like. We are almost 30% less humid, and the air is much more crisp and less likely to harbor the bugs that allow for the spread of viruses. We have been diligent in protecting the membership during every bump or spike in Covid-related issues, and we shall remain on watch for any challenge to our Club. At this time, your Finance and Long-Range Planning Committees are working with the Board of Directors to develop the best ways to enhance our Members’ enjoyment of the Club for now, tomorrow, and the next two decades and beyond. Soon, we will have specific plans identified for member review, and we have a unique opportunity to set our Club in good stance for the next several decades. Stay tuned, stay engaged, and stay happy at your PYC - we are just getting warmed up !!!
