ROBE The Robe is constructed of red. medium- weight woven crease-resistant fabric such as polyester. 2. LINING White, light-weight woven fabric such as polyester. 3. HEM The hem should be approximately 8" (20 cm) to 10" (25 cm) from the floor. 4. COLLAR The basic collar is white. self-lined in the same fabric as the robe. It is approximately 4½" (½ cm) in width. Do not make the neck of the collar too tight. Please refer to Appendix 2 “Regalia and Insignia” page 1 for Rank of Designation on Robe Collars, and illustrations following. 5. CLOSURE A very large hook-and-eye is attached to the inside neck edge. 6. FRONT BORDER White, same fabric as collar. This border is 2½" (6.5 cm) wide. 7. BUTTONHOLES These are approximately ¼" ( cm) wide to accommodate the shank of the button. The buttonholes are positioned 5" (13cm) from the front neck edge, and 2" (5cm) from the front edge of the border. 8. SHANK BUTTONS Obtainable from the Master of Regalia and you will find button bolts at dressmaker supplies or tailor shops. 9. CLOAK CHAIN This can be a single 6"(16 cm) link attached to each button, or a 12" (32cm) loop, attached to one button only, then looped over its opposite. Gold chain is available at bead supply retailers. such as Michael's, Beadworks, etc. 10. CROSS OF AMALFI The cross consists of four elements, aligned with the front edge of the left front robe, and is 15 ½" (40 cm) in diameter. The centre of the cross is l8" (47cm) from the front neck edge, and 11" (28cm) from the front edge of the robe. See Illustration for angle and shape of arms of the cross. The cross is white. CLERGY: CAPE Page 6, The Rules of the Sovereign Order, 2008 1. CAPE Black satin (worn over ministerial robes). Length of the cape is 2.0 feet (60 cm) measured from the back neck edge to wrist length. 2. LINING It is lined in white satin 3. COLLAR The collar is lined in white, and is a 1 ½" (4cm) stand-up collar. 4. CLOSURE A large hook-and-eye in the inside neck edge 5. CROSS OF AMALFI Four elements aligned with the left front edge of the cape. It is 15 ½" (40 cm) in diameter. The centre of the cross is 7½" (19 cm) from the neck front edge, and 10" (25 cm) from the left front edge. See illustration in section on Robes for shape of the arms of the cross. The cross is white. 6. CLOAK CHAIN Optional COLLARS OF THE ROBES Here you see a layout of the Collar of a Robe. This one is “fully loaded”, leaving lots of space for bands, bars and pips. You may feel the front of the collar is quite “empty” with Band A stitched so far from the front edge of the collar. In this case, you could have your tailor begin the Band 4" from the front edge, then have an inch removed from the end when the Knight or Dame is elevated, needing more space for decorations. RANK OF DESIGNATION ON ROBE COLLAR A member may wear the highest designation for his or her grade or office. Knight or Dame of Honour Unicoloured white Knight or Dame of Grace One single gold band A Knight Commander or Dame Commander of Grace One single gold band A with a pip* on each end KCs and DCs are issued a large silver star, available from the Master of Regalia. The star is worn on the left chest area of the coat or dress. See page 2, Appendix 2, Regalia & Insignia. *unless otherwise specified, all pips (stars) are gold-coloured. It consists of a full-size insignia suspended from a ribbon, worn on the left side of the chest. Women with only one chest insignia can wear it mounted on a bow made from the appropriate ribbon. When more than Chest Insignia: Member of one insignia is worn, they can be mounted on a medal bar in accordance with the the Order of Canada established Order of Precedence (see page 22). Neck Badge consists of a full-size insignia worn around the neck and suspended from a ribbon. For all civilian dress, only one neck badge can be worn at a time. Women may wear this type of insignia mounted on a bow made from the appropriate ribbon. Neck Badge: Cross of Valour Miniatures are smaller replicas of insignia worn on a narrow miniature ribbon for evening functions in place of full-size chest insignia. If more than one miniature is worn, they can be mounted on a medal bar in accordance with the established Order of Precedence. Women with only one miniature may wear it mounted on a miniature bow Miniature: Queen Elizabeth II made from the appropriate ribbon. The miniature bar must include all the miniatures an Golden Jubilee Medal individual is entitled to wear, including the miniatures of all neck badges or breast stars. The miniature bar is worn in addition to one full-size neck badge (suspended from a miniature ribbon) and a breast star where applicable. Breast Star consists of a metallic plaque, which is worn without a ribbon and attached directly to the clothing on the left side of the chest, just above the waist and below the chest insignia. The only Canadian insignia of this kind are worn by members of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem at the following grades: Breast Star: Knight or Bailiff or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame of Justice and Knight or Dame of Grace. Dame of Grace of the Order of St. John This type of insignia can only be worn with a uniform, morning dress or evening dress (white tie and tails or black tie). page 6 Black Tie — Evening Men Miniature insignia are mounted on a bar attached to the left lapel of the jacket. Only one full-size neck badge is worn, suspended from a miniature-width ribbon. The ribbon of the neck badge is worn under the shirt collar so that the insignia hangs 2.5 cm below the bow tie. A miniature of this badge should be included with those mounted on a bar. If the neck badge is the person’s only insignia, the miniature is not worn. A single breast star is worn on the left side of the jacket. Single miniature Miniatures Neck badge and miniatures Note: the same rules apply to White Tie and Tails. page 14 Long or Short Dress — Evening Women Miniatures of insignia are mounted on a bar attached to the left side of the dress. A single miniature may be suspended from a miniature bow made from the appropriate ribbon for the insignia. Only one full-size neck badge is worn at a time. It may be suspended from a bow made from a full-width ribbon or worn around the neck on a miniature-width ribbon.
