Tonight we ce lebrate two dazzling alumni , Danai Gur ira and Andre Ho lland . Dana i's four celebrated and groundbreak ing plays have made her one of the theater 's brightest voices - on top of being an accomp lished actress and deeply engaged advocate for women and gir ls Andre has consistent ly sought out roles of substance and nuance , leading him to cr it ical acc laim as an actor in television , the stage, and film , includ ing the w inner of this year's Academy Award for Best Picture. Of course , Danai and Andre are not only consummate art ists. They are also friends and co lleagues who met in the classrooms and performance spaces of the Tisch School of the Arts. Together, they have appeared on New York City 's biggest stages, from Broadway to Shakespeare in the Park to, most recent ly, The New York Times. INSTITUTE OF PERFORM ING AR TS) Danai Gurira is an award-winn ing playwright and actress. As a playwright, her works include: In the Continuum (OBIE Award , Outer Critics Award, Helen Hayes Award), Eclipsed (Tony Award Nom ination: Best Play, NAACP Award; Helen Hayes Award : Best New Play ; Connecticut Critics Circle Award Outstanding Production of a Play), and The Convert (six Ovation Awards, Los Ange les Outer Critics Award) . Danai's newest play Familiar rece ived its world premiere at Yale Rep in 2015 and prem iered in New York at Playwrights Horizons in February of 2016. She is a recipient of the Sam Norkin Award at the 2016 Drama Desk Awards , a Wh it ing Award, a Hodder Fellow , and has been commiss ioned by Yale Rep , Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Hor izons , and the Royal Court . She is currently developing a pilot for HBO. As an actor , she has appeared in the films The Visitor , Mother of George , she also played Isabella in NYSF's Measure for Measure (Equity Callaway Award) . She current ly plays Michonne on AMC's The Walking Dead (NAACP Image Award nom inat ion) and recently wrapped product ion on the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me. Danai next goes into production on Marve l's Black Panther where she will star as Okoye . She holds an MFA from Tisch , NYU. She was born in the US to Zimbabwean parents and raised in Zimbabwe. She serves as an ambassador for Bone 's ONE campa ign and is the founder of LOGpledge.org, an awareness build ing campaign focused on the plights of women and g irls around the globe . She is also the co -founder of Almasi Arts , wh ich works to give access and opportunity to the Afr ican Dramatic Arti st (almasiartsa lliance.org).
