NSF’s vital role is to support basic research and researchers who create knowledge that transforms the future. 7 MISSOURI FACT SHEET NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH FIGHTING COVID-19 Congress provided NSF with funding to prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19 in the CARES Act of 2020 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. For more information on NSF’s COVID research, visit NSF’s award database and COVID funding reports. COVID-19 RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT | A small business in Missouri was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I project to implement an artificial intelligence method for use in medical imaging of COVID-19 cases, including diagnosis of the disease, prediction of disease severity, and measurement of treatment response. This project will advance the understanding of medical imaging practices, utilizing best practices for training, validating, and deploying AI applications. In addition, the imaging AI platform developed for creating COVID-19 algorithms will be broadly useful for a wide range of other radiology applications. STEM EDUCATION STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT | An NSF Major Research Instrumentation award to Missouri State University assisted in the acquisition of an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. In general, mass spectrometry is one of the key analytical methods used to identify and characterize small quantities of chemical species in complex concentrations, for example, to identify organic matter in environmental samples. The acquisition strengthens the research infrastructure at the university and regional scale, and it will also be used for educational programs targeting women and first-generation college students since no academic institution in southwest Missouri has a mass spectrometry capability. RESEARCH DRIVING WORKFORCE INNOVATION FUTURE OF WORK | With an emphasis on two-year colleges, NSF’s Advanced Technological Education program focuses on the education of technicians for the high-technology fields that drive the nation’s economy. The program involves partnerships between academic institutions and industry to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. St. Charles Community College plans to educate agriculture technicians through the implementation of two, newly designed programs: Associate of Science Degree in Plant Science, and Associate of Science Degree in Natural Resources. The project will be a critical step in addressing the urgent need for agricultural skills education programs locally, to meet the demand for a qualified, prepared agricultural workforce in the region.
