The roads are mainly rural two lanes with a variety of surfaces and wind through areas of spectacular mountainous beauty – some of the best riding anywhere in the world. We will explore the region taking mainly small rural roads, which are not so well known. Along the way, we visit some of the lesser-known treasures like mysterious Nan, which for centuries remained autonomous and cut off from the outside world. White Temple in Chiang Rai is today one of the main attractions in north Thailand. We will also go to rather more famous or infamous places like the Golden Triangle, where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet and where in previous decades the opium poppy provided a living to many people until it was stopped in 1996 after the death of Khun Sa, a legendary warlord. Stopover at the Choui Fong Tea House, where we visit the tea plantation. We continue to Doi Mae Salong on yet more amazing twisty mountainous roads. We visit the Long Neck Women and ride up to the border of Myanmar to visit in Ban Rak Thai, a Chinese community. Along the way we ride all of the 1,864 curves from Mae Hong Son from Mae Taeng, a route becoming legendary amongst motorcyclists. Before returning to Chiang Mai we will ride up to Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, where it is usually very cool. itinerari 1 - - Chiang Mai - 0 Arrival at Chiang Mai Airport (no later than 1 pm). In Phayao we ride along the lake and enjoy a nice lunch before we continue to Nan. The roads during the rest of this day are small provincial roads passing endless villages and rice paddies. Coffee stop at Chiang Muang, it doesn’t get much more local than this. Last hours riding to Nan is crossing a mountain range, lovely curvy roads lead us to this sleepy provincial capital. Overnight in Nan. (300 km/186 miles) 3 - Nan - Chiang Rai - 250 We leave Nan and make our way through the hinterland on small back roads in a south-eastern direction. Passing through rice fields and fruit plantations and cruise through small farm villages. After a local lunch at a scenic restaurant, the ride becomes more and more spectacular. For the next hundred km or so we ride through countless bends through yet more beautiful landscapes. Just before reaching our hotel in Chiang Rai we will visit the remarkable Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) which is today recognized as one of the main attractions all over Thailand. Overnight in Chiang Rai. (250 Km/155 miles) 4 - Chiang Rai - Tha Ton - 220 We leave Chiang Rai to the legendary Golden Triangle where the three borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet where we ride up to the viewpoint at Wat Pra That Pukhao for the signature group photo. Next break is the impressive Choui Fong Tea House, where we visit the tea plantation and the tea house serving all kind of different tea blends and great cakes. Enjoy the scenery! We continue to Doi Mae Salong on yet more amazing twisty mountainous roads. Doi Mae Salong is a Chinese settlement which was built by a division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949. Today the village still offers a native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers and countless tea plantations as far as the eyes can see. We then descend from Doi Mae Salong to Thaton, a small town on the banks of the Kok River, bordering with Myanmar. We stay overnight in our hotel in Thaton. (220 Km/137 miles) 5 - Tha Ton - Pai - 240 Another great motorcycle day is ahead of us. After breakfast, we ride up the hill in Thaton and enjoy a splendid view from Wat Thaton over the town and the vicinity. We follow the main road Nr. 107 and have a coffee break at the Hua Luk Royal Project. Lunch will be held at The Nest Resort with a beautiful view at the Limestone Mountains in the back. At Mae Tang, we turn right on 1095 and cross the mountains from to Pai. This is the beginning of the road to Mae Hong Son, famous for having 1864 bends of varying sharpness. Before we reach our hotel we stop at an Elephant Camp near Pai. Once in Pai, enjoy the pool at the resort, stroll down along the walking street etc. We stay overnight in Pai. (240 Km/149 miles) 6 - Pai - Mae Hong Son - 180 Today is a rather relaxed riding day. We will ride for about 180 km with lots of new corners! In the morning we pass two mountains with 2 nice scenic viewpoints en route. The second viewpoint has vendor stalls occupied by hill tribe people selling their local products. Just before taking the road to Ban Rak Thai we will stop at a nice Coffee Shop on the right-hand side. Once in Ban Rak Thai, we enjoy lunch in one of the local Chinese restaurants by the little lake. They serve delicious Chinese specialities. Ban Rak Thai means literally "the Thai-loving village", built around a lake on the Myanmar border. After lunch, we continue to Mae Hong Son and the boat pier to the Longneck village. Enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Pai River for about 20 min to the Karen Long Neck village. The Karen, a tribal minority, historically lived in the hills on the Myanmar side of the border. Some of their women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. Many ideas regarding why the coils are worn have been suggested. Some have hypothesized that the rings protected women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Another theory is that the coils originate from the desire to look more attractive. We return by boat to the pier and ride to the nearby Fern Resort, a lovely resort in the middle of rice paddies. Enjoy a drink at the sunset bar overlooking the rice paddies and then dinner at the resort. If still some energy left, take a drink at the bond fire. We stay overnight at Fern Resort near Mae Hong Son. (180 Km/112 miles) 7 - Mae Hong Son - Chiang Mai - 300 In the morning we ride Road 108 from Mae Hong Son to Khun Yuam. It is a great winding road with wide bends. In Khun Yuam we can visit the local museum if you like. The Imperial Japanese Army troops were stationed in Khun Yuam during the construction of a highway intended to cross Burma to India. Tip: Ask the museum staff to show the video about history (approx. 10 min, included). Next to the museum, there is a great Coffee Shop and a 7/11 store. From Khun Yuam proceed to Mae Chaem on Road 1088 and 1263 on nice twisty back roads. Here is a little local restaurant where we stop for lunch. We continue on Road 1192 and turn left on Road 1009 up to the top of Doi Inthanon, which at 2,565 meters is the highest mountain in Thailand and / or visit the Royal Pagodas. Then continue to the Wachiratharn Waterfall - an impressive and powerful 80 m high waterfall. Continue on Road 1009 until you reach the intersection. The last 50 km or so we will drive on Road 108 until we reach our Service Center Chiang Mai. At the Service Centre hand over of the motorcycles. We transfer you back to the hotel. In the evening we meet for our Welcome Dinner, sharing great moments. Overnight in Chiang Mai.
