The text was received with enthusiasm and seen as a reference point for responsible global coexistence. But others have rejected it as representing a threat to Catholic identity. This article offers a historical-contextual reading. The text deals with violence against human beings and against the common home, and it is intended as a call to religions to show how the future depends on their dialogue, mutual knowledge and fraternal collaboration. Thus, the document integrates the formulations of the Second Vatican Council and the requests made by popes over the last 55 years. The author is an Islamologist and professor of dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. FOCUS 16 ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND JOB CREATION AMONG AFRICAN YOUTH Wilfred Sumani, SJ Young people constitute the highest percentage in African population demographics. The youth are associated with energy, imagination, playfulness and risk-taking. These qualities can be channeled into entrepreneurial ventures so as to create new opportunities for young people in Africa; for example, the creation of startups that can expand to become new companies. In fact, following the logic of “creative destruction,” some of the new companies created by young people can lead to new and more efficient ways of doing business in Africa. The author teaches at Hekima College in Nairobi. ABSTRACTS ARTICLE 25 MIGRATION AND ISLAM Giovanni Sale, SJ Islamic immigration is perceived by some Europeans as representing a threat to national identity. This has clearly favored the advancement of populist parties in almost all EU member countries. From a conceptual point of view “Islamophobia” reduces religion to ethnicity, so that the religious element is used as a factor of identity and discrimination, whereas the reality of the Islamic presence in Europe is ethnically and religiously pluralistic. Islamophobia must be fought by promoting integration and by calling into action both public institutions and civil society. PROFILE 39 LEONARDO DA VINCI, A UNIVERSAL MAN Giancarlo Pani, SJ This year marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519). One of the protagonists of the Italian Renaissance and of human history, he is emblematic of the “universal man” who was able to think critically and unify knowledge. He represents analytical, rigorous and methodical study, and explored the intimate relationship between human beings, nature and the cosmos. He was long considered a genius because of his paintings, for example, Lady with an Ermine, the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, the Virgin of the Rocks, but from the 19th century onward he was re-evaluated as a writer (the Codices) and a scientist. The spheres in which he revealed his genius are almost endless, and the charm and the mysteries of an adventurous life are far from being unraveled. ABSTRACTS PROFILE 51 THE BEATIFICATION OF ENRIQUE ANGELELLI AND COMPANIONS Diego Fares, SJ On Saturday April 27, 2019, in the Argentinean city of La Rioja, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, representing Pope Francis, presided over a Mass at which four Riojani martyrs were beatified: Wenceslao Pedernera, a family man and active member of the rural Catholic movement (1936-76); the French priest Gabriel José Longueville, missionary in La Rioja (1931-76); a young Franciscan friar and ardent preacher, Carlos de Dios Murias (1945-76); and Bishop Enrique Angelelli (1923-76). We can define them as martyrs of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, as Cardinal Becciu said in the homily. They were martyred in Argentina in the 1970s, where there was no room for a commitment to social justice that sought encounter and dialogue between the parties. ARTICLE 66 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE HUMAN PERSON CHINESE AND WESTERN PERSPECTIVES Antonio Spadaro, SJ - Thomas Banchoff The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in fields including communications, transport, robotics, medicine, economics, and law raises new questions about the concept we have of ourselves as persons and our actions and responsibilities according to philosophical, religious, and secular traditions. These were the issues addressed during a seminar sponsored by the China Forum for Civilizational Dialogue – an institution created through the joint commitment of La Civiltà Cattolica and Georgetown University – and the Pontifical Council for Culture, held at Santa Clara University (California), April 3-5, 2019. The meeting brought together scholars from China, the United States and Europe to examine how the great changes underway are posing challenges to Christian and Confucian traditions, as well as to other religious and secular traditions. ABSTRACTS ARTS & CULTURE 78 SVETLANA ALEXIEVICH IN SEARCH OF HUMANITY Marc Rastoin, SJ Svetlana Alexievich, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 2015, is an original writer. Journalist and historian, she has composed her books from hundreds of encounters with ordinary, often anonymous, people. It is through the selection and organization of their testimonies that she conveys her sense of empathy and her humanistic vision. Thus she allows us to enter in a privileged way into what has been called “the Russian soul” and through an incarnation in the heart of Russian destiny in a terrible century, she leads to the universal and opens our horizons. PROFILE 88 THE SACRIFICE OF DON GIUSEPPE DIANA Francesco Occhetta, SJ It has been 25 years since the Casalesi clan killed Don Giuseppe Diana. The consequences of that sacrifice continue to be felt in the Campania region and throughout Italy. Don Giuseppe was a cultured, courageous and humble priest. A love for the truth and giving a voice to the oppressed were his priorities, together with a concern to combat Mafia culture, even at the cost of his own life. His witness to the Gospel has given many people the strength to change their lives and the culture of their land. Among them are the final declarations of the four seminars of the Catholic- Muslim Forum.3 This time, in contrast, delegations were not the signatories, but rather the Pontiff himself and an Islamic leader.
