The geological information in DiGMapGB is separated into four themes: artificial ground, landslide deposits, superficial deposits and bedrock, shown here in separate maps. The fifth ‘combined geology’ map superimposes all four of these themes, to show the geological formations that occur at the surface, just beneath the soil. More information about DiGMapGB-50 and how the various geological units are classified can be found on the BGS website (www.bgs.ac.uk). The maps are labelled with two-part computer codes that indicate the name of the geological unit and its composition. BGS Report No: GR_218809/1 Geological Assessment This module contains a geological description of the site or area specified by the customer. It is based on currently available 1:10 000 scale geological maps unless otherwise stated, together with other relevant local information such as borehole records. Setting: The site is located on an agricultural field that slopes relatively steeply towards the south. At its highest point (northwest corner) the field is approximately 200 m above Ordnance datum, by contrast the lowest point (southern field boundary) is approximately 180 m above Ordnance Datum. The site drains downslope towards the Ordley Brook, situated 325 m away to the south. Artificial ground: No artificial ground is recorded on the BGS maps. Ordnance Survey historic maps from 1885 show the site to be open agricultural land. Superficial deposits: No superficial deposits are recorded in the search area. Superficial deposits are recorded in BGS datasets approximately 500 m to the west and north east, but these are unlikely to be present at the site. Rockhead depth: The Sherwood Sandstone Group (bedrock) is mapped at surface, but the first few metres directly below ground commonly weather to a loose sand. Bedrock: The site is directly underlain by the Triassic (230 million year old) Sherwood Sandstone Group. The Sherwood Sandstone Group is split into a number of constituent formations. The formation at the surface is the Helsby Sandstone Formation. The Helsby Sandstone was deposited in a hot arid climate that saw the migration of windblown sand dunes and periodic flooding of desert rivers. The Helsby Sandstone Formation at this site has an estimated thickness of 25-35 m and is comprised of red-brown to pale yellow, fine- to medium-grained sandstone. Locally the sandstone can be micaceous (contains mica), cross-bedded and planar-bedded. Pebbles may be common, particularly towards the base of the formation. Thin, isolated lenses of reddish brown siltstone and mudstone may also be encountered throughout the formation. The Helsby Sandstone Formation forms part of a large regional groundwater aquifer in north Cheshire and Merseyside. Care should be taken in any investigations or development to ensure that the aquifer is not contaminated. Date: 24 July 2018 Page: 9 of 28 © NERC, 2018. All rights reserved. BGS Report No: GR_218809/1 The Helsby Sandstone Formation is underlain by the Chester Formation of the Sherwood Sandstone Group. The Chester Formation can be up to 300 m thick and is comprised of fine to medium grained sandstone, with isolated siltstone and mudstone lenses and scattered pebbles common throughout. The Chester Formation is also part of the Sherwood Sandstone regional aquifer system. Additional considerations: Two faults throwing to the south-southwest have been mapped within the search area, with the southern of the two faults present in the southernmost part of the site, close to the field boundary.
