Alberta’s Lakes The eight hundred stories we tell. Lake Athabasca Peerless Lake Musreau Lake Smoke Lake Iosegun Lake Sturgeon Lake Utikuma Lake Utikuma Lake Cold Lake Cold Lake Lac La Biche Moose Lake Pigeon Lake Pigeon Lake Pigeon Lake Glenmore Reservoir Moraine Lake Lake Minnewanka Kananaskis Lakes Isle Lake Isle Lake Lesser Slave Lake • Began in 1991 as a non-profit organization. • Goal: improve or maintain the health of lakes and watersheds by engaging Albertans. • Two full time staff and up to five seasonal staff, 15 board members, ~60 volunteers •Monitoring program which allows individuals or stewardship groups to track the health of their lake over time. •Sampled over 100 unique lakes throughout Alberta since 1996. •Fun and engaging way to educate the public. • LakeWatch program is dependent on volunteers. • Volunteers meet technicians 5 times throughout the summer. • Volunteers provide transportation! •29 lakes in 2014 •Provincial Park Program •BRWA Program •Base Lake Program •Sponsored Lakes • Parameters collected include: – nutrients (TP, TDP, TKN, Nitrates, Nitrites), – metals (29 Total Recoverable), – temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles, – chlorophyll-a, – water clarity, – cyanobacterial toxins, – phytoplankton, – invasive mussels, etc… • Dreissenid Mussels: • Every ALMS lake monitored for the presence of: – Juvenile Veligers – Adult zebra/quagga mussels. • ALMS facilitates zebra mussel substrate monitoring with volunteers at lakes across the province. • Invasive Macrophytes: • Intensive surveys done at three lakes: – Chestermere – Sylvan – Wizard • Two plant identification workshops held in 2014: – Citizen scientist monitoring to begin at lakes across the province in 2015. – ALMS supporting citizen scientists with visual identification and DNA analysis. • Master’s in Public Health Practicum Student: – Developed educational materials on swimmer’s itch and cyanobacteria. – Worked with: • AESRD microcystin data • AESRD WISP spectrometer data •Working with stewards on developing lake watershed management plans! •Hubbles •Baptiste •Pigeon Enjoy the conference! 780-702-ALMS www.alms.ca .
