The honorary degrees will be conferred on three former Prime Ministers - The Right Hon. Sir John Gorton, The Right Hon. Mr Michael Somare and The Hon. Mr Gough Whitlam - in recognition of particular achievements. Sir John Gorton and Mr Whitlam played key roles in supporting the independence of Papua New Guinea. Mr Somare led his people to nationhood. The University honours their efforts in promoting the growth of a distinctive and unifying national identity which would liberate the cultural and artistic ARMS OF THE UNIVERSITY potential of their peoples.
