Metrobus Ridership Is up About 16 Percent for the Routes That Operate Through and Within 22202

METROBUS AVERAGE DAILY PASSENGER TRIPS Highlights Four major Metrobus route groups connect the 22202 zip code area to a large area extending outside of Arlington County. Since 2005, the combined ridership on these routes has risen 16 percent. However, WMATA can’t provide insights into Metrobus use for trips specifically beginning or ending in the 22202 zip code area. Description The data below shows the average total weekday ridership, on an annual basis, for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrobus routes which provide service in and through 22202. The data was pulled from the annual data that the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) has compiled for Metrobus routes in Virginia since the year 2001. WMATA made major service changes that make it difficult to compare ridership between the years 2001 to 2004 with current data. With this in mind, data presented here examines the time period between the years of 2005 to 2014. Average Weekday Total Daily Passenger Trips by Route 22202 Transportation and Planning Data Compilation & Reporting METROBUS AVERAGE DAILY PASSENGER TRIPS: Context in Planning Spectrum Where is this data used in the planning spectrum? Coordinated County Building Level Sector Plans & Site Plans & Regional Comprehensive Transportation Small Area Plans PDSPs Planning Plan Studies Background Metrobus routes are typically longer than Arlington Transit (ART) routes and typically provide service between multiple jurisdictions. The data reported to NVTC includes ridership along the full length of the routes shown, not just the ridership within 22202. Unfortunately, historical data pertaining exclusively to the 22202 area is not available for comparison. Additionally, unlike Metrorail routes, Metrobus routes and service are modified every few years. Therefore, it is important to look at the data and trends more broadly because direct comparisons are difficult to make across a 10 year period. Findings/Conclusions Since the year 2005, Metrobus ridership is up about 16 percent for the routes that operate through and within 22202. The Metrobus ridership appears to be following similar trends as Metrorail ridership, with ridership peaking between the years of 2008 and 2009 then declining slightly. Ridership has generally been stable between the years 2010 to 2015. Given limitations in how ridership is reported, it is not possible to look at the ridership for only the 22202 zip code area over a period of time. Data Source This data is gathered by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) from WMATA. NVTC compiles transit information directly from local and regional transit service providers operating in Northern Virginia. The data was compiled from the NVTC data portal for all Metrobus routes that serve 22202. http://www.novatransit.org/resources/ridership-data/ METROBUS AVERAGE DAILY PASSENGER TRIPS: Route Descriptions Metrobus 16G,H,K Metrobus Routes 16G,H,K operate along Columbia Pike, connecting Pentagon, Pentagon City and Crystal City Metro stations to Columbia Heights West, Bailey's Crossroads and Skyline City. Within 22202 these routes primarily serve Pentagon City. In 2011, this service replaced the 16G,H,K,W Routes, providing similar service. 23A,C (Including 23B) Metrobus Routes 23A,C connect the Crystal City Station to the Shirlington Transit Center, Ballston-MU Station (23B route) and Tysons Corner (23A route). Within 22202 these routes operate along portions of Crystal Drive, 23 Street South, Arlington Ridge Road and South Glebe Road. Not all of the ridership for this route group originates from or is destine to locations within 22202. The data reported to NVTC for this route group provides totals along the entire route which extends well beyond 22202 and Arlington County. In 2011, this service replaced the routes identified as 23A,B,C,C/,T,T/ in the NVTC data. 9A,E Following U.S. Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway), Metrobus Route 9A operates between the Pentagon and points south, with stops at Crystal City Metro station, Potomac Yard Shopping Center, Braddock Road Metro station in Alexandria, and Huntington Metro Station. The data reported to NVTC for this route group provides totals along the entire route which extends well beyond 22202 and Arlington County. In 2011, this service replaced the routes identified as 9A,B,C,C/,E in the NVTC data. 9S (Replaced in 2014 by Metroway service.) Metrobus Route 9S runs from 5:30 am to 7:30 pm on weekdays, between Crystal City and Potomac Yard. The 9S provides a convenient connection to Metrorail for Potomac Yard residents. Scheduled frequency is every six minutes during peak hours (5:30-9:00 am and 3:30-6:00 pm) and every 12 minutes during mid-day and evening hours. The data reported to NVTC for this route provides totals for ridership entirely within 22202. The 9S service began in 2006 with the buildout of Potomac Yard in Arlington. In 2014 the 9S was replaced by the new Metroway service, providing premium Metrobus service between the Braddock Road Station and Crystal City by way of Potomac Yard. Based on initial data, through February 2016, the new Metroway service has begun with a strong start, raising weekday ridership to nearly 1,500 per day. This exceeds ridership of the 9S bus (the Crystal City/Potomac Yard shuttle, which was replaced by Metroway) by 50%. 10A,E,R,S Metrobus Route 10A,E,R,S operates between Rosslyn and Hunting Point, in Alexandria, via the Pentagon and Crystal City. Other locations served include Potomac Yard Center, Del Ray and Old Town Alexandria. The 10A and 10E provide service between locations in Alexandria and the Pentagon Station via Crystal City. In 2014 the 10R and 10S were added to provide service between locations in Alexandria and the Rosslyn Station via Crystal City. These routes help to augmenting some of the service along the Metrorail Blue line reduced by Rush+ service changes. The data reported to NVTC for this route group provides totals along the entire route which extends well beyond 22202 and Arlington County. In 2011, this service replaced the routes identified as 10A,A/,E in the NVTC data.
