In most cases, the hull lines file results from a field measurement of the hull (or sister hull). “Field-measured” means measured in the cradle using an ORC Hull Measurement Instrument. In some cases, the hull file is provided by the respective design office or may be a modification to an existing field-measured hull to reflect a variation in keel type that was not field- measured. For example, an ORC Rating Office may modify a field-measured deep- draft hull file to produce a shoal-draft hull file for the same design. This is rarely permitted for IMS, but is acceptable for ORC Club. The following table lists all yacht models for which the ORC had an existing hull file available as of the date shown. Obvious custom hulls (one-offs) have been excluded, but bear in mind that in identifying custom hulls the ORC is largely dependent on what the local Measurer or Rating Office may enter as the class identification for each yacht rated. Therefore there are likely to be a certain number of entries in the table which are not production models or for which only one hull was ever built. For the same reason, you may not find a class under the name familiar to you, but under an alternative name, e.g., First instead of Beneteau or vice-versa. Or you may find it listed under the builder’s name rather than the class name. Procedures are in place aimed at standardizing class naming, but this will take some time to fully implement. Keel and other variations are usually coded with a fairly obvious abbreviation, for example DK for deep keel, SD for shoal draft, BK for bulb keel, WK for wing keel, CB for centerboard, CR for cruising edition or R for racing configuration, etc. However these codes are also still in the process of being standardized. In the case of classes produced with several keel options, the owner should always coordinate carefully with the Measurer or Rating Office to ensure that the owner’s keel actually agrees in total draft with the designation given in the table. When a new production hull is field-measured, the Measurer may have no way of knowing that it will eventually be the deep-keel version of a new production model and therefore will take it to be the standard version. In fact, sometimes the builders themselves do not anticipate that they will ultimately be producing also a shoal-keel version. Therefore, the keel designations listed in the table, although correct in most cases, should always be confirmed by checking the total draft on file with that of the yacht to be rated. Last, but not least -- if, after consulting the table and the local rating officials, it is determined that no hull file exists for the yacht to be rated, the Rating Office can still produce a hull file from additional information you will be asked to provide. However, do not automatically dismiss the option of actually getting a field measurement of the hull’s lines (even for ORC Club). Not only will this produce the most accurate result, but in some cases it has proved to be easier and less time-consuming than attempting to track down and obtain hull lines in a useful format from a design office, particularly for older yachts. As additional class hulls are measured they are periodically added to the table. If a class is not found, the owner should always check for latest availability with the local Measurer or Rating Office and, for ORC Club, check also if a missing keel configuration can be produced by modifying an existing hull file.
