No properties flooded in Cornwall in 2015 Properties in Cornwall affected by internal flooding Year No of properties 2011 24 2012 243 2013 83 2014 329 2015 0 2016 (excluding 26 13th September) However • Includes only internal flooding • Far more properties “affected” by flooding • Excludes those that Cornwall Council are unaware of • Excludes coastal damages Events over last 12 months • 13 August 2015 • Heavy rain swept across Cornwall with surface water affecting highways • A39 at Norway Inn flooded but passable • Fire crews narrowly circumvented property flooding at Stithians Events over last 12 months • 27 October 2015 • Two days of persistent heavy rain • Coinciding high tides • Liskeard to Looe branch railway line was closed due to flooding Events over last 12 months • Atlantic Storms of Winter 2015/6 • Catastrophic flooding in North of England but Cornwall largely unaffected • Storm Desmond – 5/6 December • Storm Eva – 23/24 December • Damage to sea wall at Looe Harbour Events over last 12 months • Atlantic Storms of Winter 2015/6 • Storm Frank – 29/30 December • Sea wall failure at Long Rock resulting in closure of the SW Coast Path • Seawall failure also occurred at Castle Beach in Falmouth Events over last 12 months • Atlantic Storms of Winter 2015/6 • Wake of Storm Imogen – 6 February 2016 • A30 and A39 suffered significant traffic problems due to flooding • Flooding occurred across West Cornwall and North Cornwall • five people had to be rescued from cars trapped in floodwaters Events over last 12 months • Atlantic Storms of Winter 2015/6 • Wake of Storm Imogen – 6 February 2016 • Major flood incidents occurred in Portreath, Hayle and at Blackwater near Chiverton Cross. The playground at Mousehole Community Primary School flooded • Newquay-Par and Liskeard-Looe railway branch lines closed Events over last 12 months • 10 April 2016 • Strong winds whipped up waves in Penzance, overtopping the Promenade and the railway line at Eastern Green • St Mawes was also badly affected by wave overtopping and flooding from the sea Studies • Mount’s Bay Shoreline Strategy • Hayle Estuary Scoping Study • Par drainage network modelling • Joint project with EA and SWW • Feeds in to StARR Project • Shoreline Management Plan Review Studies • Beach and Dune Management Plans • Constantine Bay • Fistral Beach • Harvey’s Towans • Par Sands • Porthcothan • Porthtowan • Praa Sands • Summerleaze • Widemouth Bay Bids for jointly funded Defra and EU ERDF Projects • St Austell Bay Resilient Regeneration (StARR) • Defra £20M, ERDF £10M • Long Rock Strategic Coastal Improvements • Defra £2.7M, ERDF £1M Working with Environment Agency to develop future projects at: • Bude • Camel Valley • Fowey • Looe • Mousehole • Newlyn • Penzance • Portreath • Wadebridge Devolution • Inaugural meeting of the Strategic Resilience Board took place on 25 March 2016 • The board is made up of: • Officers of Cornwall Council, • The Environment Agency, • South West Water, • The South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, • The Cornwall Catchment Partnership, • Cornwall Community Flood Forum, • The Local Nature Partnership, • The Local Enterprise Partnership, • Westcountry Rivers Trust and • Emergency Services.
