National Landscape Conservation System Breau of Lan Managem nt PAINTED ROCK PETROGLYPH SITE AND CAMPGOUND GENERAL INFORMATION: Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campgrou d, approximately 90 miles southwest of Phoenix, Arizona, provides visitors the opportlmity to view an ancient archae logical site containing btmdreds of symbolic and artistic rock etchings, or "petroglyphs," produced centuries ago by prehistoric peoples. There are also inscri ptions made by people ho passed lhrougb during historic times. Several historic trails lie within the caropgrotmd. The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, the B lLtt rfiel l Overland Stage Route and the Mormon Battalion Trail are three trails that played prominent roles in the history of Arizona and the American West. V isitors can learn about the site and historic trails through professional interpreti ve panel located on the site. ACCESS: Exit Interstate 8 a1 Painted Rock Dam R oad (Exit 102) approximately 12.5 miles west of Gila Bend. Travel north on P ainted Rock Dam R oad (paved) 10.7 miles to Rock P int Road. Painte d Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground is 0.6 miles west of Painted Rock Dam Road on Rocky Point Road. FACILITIES: Picnic tables, barbeque grills, steel fire rings and a vault toilet are provided for picnicking and primitive camping. A ramada is avail able for group activities. No potable water, trailer hook-up s or dump station are provid d -- these facilities are available nearby in Gila Bend. During October through April , a campground bast may be on site. Fees: $2.00/vehicle for day-use; $8.00/v hic1e/night camping. Golden Age, Golden Access and all "America the Beautiful" passes are accepted for applicable discounts. Formerly a unit of the Arizona State Parks system, jurisdiction of the area reverted to the Bureau of La d Management in 1989. The former ··Painted Rocks State Park" . eluded a "Lake Unit" near Painted Rock Dam approximately 4.5 miles north of the petroglyph site. This area included camping fac ilities and was a popular fishing attraction, but was closed to the public in 1989 due to unsafe levels of pollutan in the Gila River. Currentl y. there is no public access to Painted Rock Dam or the Lake Unit. MAPS: Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is shown on most Arizona road maps as "Painted Rocks State Park." NOTES: • Highest visitation from is October through April. • Winter temperatures vary from freezing at nigbt to near 80° F during daytime. Summer temperatures vary from near 70° F at night to near 120° F during daytime. • Drinking water is not provided, so bring plenty. • You may encounter rattlesnakes or other poisonou creatures; watch fo r them and be careful where you put your bands and feet. Do not harass reptiles -- most bites result from people play ing with, collecting or attempting to kill L em. • We appreciate your help 7Vith the preservation of this fragile and important archaeological site. Remember that touching, tapping, and cl imbing on the rocks causes increased levels of deterioration of these ancient draw' gs.
