He came to the United States when he was thirteen years old. After he graduated from Nanqiao Chinese School in l932, he was hired as a Chinese teacher and later was promoted to Dean of Study and, eventually, Principal of Nanqiao Chinese School. In his college years, he developed a special interest in studying Chinese American history, 1 particularly the history of those who came from his homeland district. He was on the staff of Editing at the Chinese Times. He also served in the U.S. army as Staff Sergeant and was stationed Fort Snelling in 1934. He was given the titles of “journalist, teacher, and soldier”. It is not clear as to when he joined the Army nor when he left the Army. He did write about his years in the Army and was published in the newspaper. In 1947, he married. In 1954, he received his Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of California, Berkeley. In l970, he retired from his last job as a translator. Since then, he devoted his time to research Chinese American history and to organize the materials he had collected over the years. In 1973-1974, he edited A History of the Sam Yup Benevolent Association in the United States. He has truly been the pioneer in the study of Chinese American history. 歐玉 Yuk Ow Collection AAS ARC 2000/70 Scope and Content The Yuk Ow collection is an extensive collection of biographies of both Chinese and Chinese Americans. It reflects the struggle to survive in a foreign land. From the frequent correspondence between families we are able to know how much the family at home depended on the financial support of the one in America. Genealogy is a big section of this collection. Yuk Ow focuses mainly on the province of Guandong, and his own family clan from 1265 to 1975. A large part of the collection is also clippings and pictures from Chinese American community newspaper clippings and pictures. It demonstrates what the Chinese have contributed to this foreign land, and they call this country their home. Whether it is in business, religion, community service, or politics, their contribution and participation are obvious. Mr. Ow researches extensively on the activities of Chinese American organizations and on the relationships among them. There is an extensive section on the Sam Yup organizations which include their activities and people. Chinese students in the United States and Europe from 1850 to 1979 are also included. Among items in the collection, Mr. Ow bought precious documents dating back to 1840s. There are prefecture’s warnings about pirates, and rewards for the apprehension of thieves; official correspondence between the British Consulate and Chinese officials in Qing dynasty.
