Groups included The Headliners BOARD: $500 (Alpha Tau Omega house), the Limelighters (Beta Theta Pi), the Stereos (Phi Lambda Phi), and the Fenways (Alpha Tau Omega and Lambda Chi Alpha). BOOKS & SUPPLIES: $65 • Alpha Tau Omega won the Interfraternity Sing. Beta Theta Pi placed second, STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE: $55 while Phi Gamma Delta placed third. • In April 1966, the Board of Trustees approved a plan for new fraternity housing. STUDENT CENTER FEE: $30 TOTAL MINIMUM COST: $2,285 Sports • Herring, Ivan and Stasik were named to the 1965 All-Conference football squad. Academics • W&J wrestling claimed the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship. Benic, Phelan, Prado and Ruha captured individual titles. • The College added 21 new faculty members, bringing the total number of faculty to 74. • The W&J golf team captured the PAC Championship. • The Board of Trustees voted to expand the student body to 1,100 students by 1970. • Providence Hall, completed in 1833 at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, was razed to make way for a new school in the Canon-McMillan system. The building housed dining and classroom facilities for Jefferson students, and from 1872 to 1912, housed Jefferson Academy, a preparatory school. • More than 160 former students gathered to honor Dr. Clarence Dewey Dieter as he retired in June 1966 after more than 40 years teaching at W&J. Student Life • After being closed for a year, the bowling lanes were re-opened in 1965 in the campus center with a new, automatic pin setter. • In fall 1965, the Student Council abolished freshman customs. • The College enrolled Jacqueline Townsend, former Miss America, as a special student. Spouse: What clubs, organization and athletic teams were you a member of while at W&J? Marjorie A. Alessio; married for 44 Years I was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and the football team. Children: What is your most fond or funny W&J memory? Robert Charles Alessio (deceased at 24), Laurel Ann Alessio (46), Sheryl Lynn I remember seeing President John F. Kennedy in an open convertible coming down Beau Street on a fall Saturday Alessio (37) and Christin Michelle Alessio (35) morning parade during a visit to “little Washington” in 1962. Unfortunately, I also remember hearing of his Grandchildren: assassination while assisting in a physics lab a year later. I also remember seeing Simon and Garfunkel in the quad Taylor Ann Mullen (18), Ashley Elizabeth Mullen (17), Ryan Eugene Mullen (15), on a prom Saturday afternoon in 1965 (or was it 1966?), before they became “nationally known” in The Graduate. My career highlights include: I am very grateful for the fine liberal arts education that I received at W&J.
