FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Lt. Col. Darrin Haas August 22, 2021 OFFICE: 615.313.0662 Hometown News Release [email protected] Nashville Guardsman commissioned as second lieutenant NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 2nd Lt. Katherine DePriest graduated from the Tennessee National Guard’s Officer Candidate School, Class 64, and earned her commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during a ceremony at Smyrna’s Volunteer Training Site on Aug. 22. OCS is designed to test a candidate’s mental, emotional, and physical fitness to lead Soldiers. DePriest saw the most growth in her physical fitness, where she was able to challenge herself with the updated Army Combat Fitness Test. “The physical training was the most demanding for me,” said DePriest. “I took up CrossFit to improve my mind and body to overcome some of the events in the ACFT since they requires more upper body strength.” DePriest is the only member of her family to service as an officer in the United States Army and takes pride in being able to serve her state and country. “I am excited for the opportunity to lead Soldiers,” said DePriest. “The OCS program within the 117th Regimental Training Institute prepared us mentally and physically to take on new responsibilities and grow as leaders.” DePriest is a wife and graduated from Nashville’s Father Ryan High School in 2010. She has a bachelor’s degree in public relations and master’s degree in organizational leadership from Western Kentucky University. She branched signal corps and will report to Knoxville’s 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment as a platoon leader. - (30) – Joint Public Affairs Office • Houston Barracks • 3041 Sidco Drive • Nashville, TN 37204-1502 Tel: 615-313-0633 • Fax: 615-313-3129 • tn.gov/military 2nd Lt.
