Twenty-Five Thousand Students Secure One-On-One Academic Assistance From College Instructors Through Pearson’s Tutor Center Value-Added Resource Unique in Publishing Industry The Career Center Now Open, Other Services Being Expanded Boston, MA – November 1, 2004 – Pearson Education’s The Tutor Center is a unique resource in the publishing industry, an in-house education service providing students personal access to college instructors who help explain concepts and solutions to problems in Pearson’s Higher Education textbooks. "Pearson was the first, and remains the only, publisher to offer in-house, college level instructors to support its textbooks and assist its students,” said Dr. Alice Armstrong, Manager, The Tutor Center. "More than 25,000 students have taken advantage of this terrific service since we opened our doors five years ago, and we are continually upgrading and adding to our resources.” The Tutor Center works with students in the U.S. and Canada whose instructors have selected Pearson-branded texts from Pearson Addison-Wesley, Pearson Allyn & Bacon, Pearson Benjamin Cummings, and Pearson Longman imprints ( www.aw-bc.com/tutorcenter), as well as from Pearson Prentice Hall Higher Education ( www.prenhall.com/tutorcenter). Pearson Prentice Hall, which currently offers assistance with math textbooks, has also added support for its interactive English textbooks. Using college instructors recruited from the Boston academic community, The Tutor Center is available to students who register with the service (which is included with a new book when ordered by course instructors as part of a textbook package or which can be purchased separately). Once registered, students may use The Tutor Center service in four ways: via phone, fax, email, or interactive web (which allows students to share their screens and interact with tutors online). In any combination of these four ways, students can contact the service three times per night. Students will receive explanations of concepts in textbooks, as well as detailed solutions to problems with answers indicated in the texts. "I found The Tutor Center’s flexible hours and knowledgeable professors to be indispensable to my study needs,” said Paul Kowalkiewicz, a student at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. "I am a working student, and didn’t have time to go to office hours for extra help. The Tutor Center was there when I needed it.” An additional service offered by The Tutor Center is the Adjunct Support Center for part-time instructors teaching biology (selected Pearson Benjamin Cummings texts) or developmental mathematics (Pearson Addison-Wesley texts). Qualified instructors with over 50 years combined experience at both the community college and university level can assist adjuncts with consultation on suggested syllabi, tips on using the textbook support package, assistance with From www.pearsoned.com/pr_2004/110104.htm 1 8 December 2006 textbook content and advice on classroom strategies. Earlier this year, Pearson Education introduced The Career Center. This new resource is designed to address the wide range of preparation and life stages of people attempting to develop their careers through higher education. Career Specialists from different academic institutions and disciplines are available to help students of any age with career advice, resume preparation, reviewing networking relationships, and building professional reputations. Access to The Career Center is similar to The Tutor Center, through a registration process that then entitles students to four hours (total) of career counseling, or eight 30-minute sessions. Once registered, the student may use the service via phone, fax, email, or interactive web, in any combination of these four ways, two times per night.
