OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF ICSD HIGHLIGHTS ICSD ACTIVITIES PRESIDENT ICSD President took part in IOC Sport and Active Society Commission Lausanne, Switzerland - Dr. Valery Rukhledev was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of Sport and Active Society Commission, Sam Ramsamy, as its newly elected member. The IOC Commission is formerly known under the name “Sport for All” and part of the IOC Agenda 2020. Dr. Rukhledev was one of the experts that participated in drafting the terms of the Agenda. www.ciss.org! Volume # 4 www.deaflympics.com October-December 2016 " ! INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ! OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF Dr. Rukhledev said, “I am extremely honored and humbled to be able to represent the ICSD on the IOC Sport and Active Society Commission and to contribute to the excellent work being already done. Since finishing my sport career, I have made it my life purpose to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and to collaborate with all the members of the Olympic Family to use our experience as role models to encourage participation to promote sport and I will continue to do so through the membership on the Sport and Active Society Commission”. The Commission main mission is to promote an active life style in society, with a particular focus on youth, using major events as an opportunity to promote activity, and to promote sport as a right for all regardless of nationality, religion, gender, socio-economic background or disability and Palace Hotel, Lausanne sports ability to transcend all issues. ICSD will cooperate with IOC Commission in such initiative as fighting obesity among the youth by encouraging an active lifestyle. It will be made possible through Development Grants, events such as Olympic Day activities, as well as longer-term projects available through Olympic Solidarity/Sport for All Programs that benefit local communities. IOC Sport for All Toolkit”. Dr. Rukhledev said that with the increasing growth of urbanization and obesity rates, especially among the youth, the significance of physical activity could not be underestimated. IOC President Thomas Bach paid special attention to the importance of the anti-doping problem. ICSD President extended his congratulations to Mr. Sam Ramsamy for the successful work of this important Commission. He also thanked Mr. Ramsamy for his great contribution in the promotion of sport for disabled persons. He added that ICSD looks forward to continuing its close relationship with the IOC. At the end Dr. Rukhledev visited the IOC Women and Sport Awards Gala 2016 where Ethiopian sports journalist Dagim Zinabu Tekle becomes first male to receive world trophy by President Bach. ICSD President visits SportAccord International Federation Forum This years`s theme of IF Forum was The Power of Sport to Drive World Health. Most of the sessions addressed the way the international sport community support the their efforts in furthering Safe Sport and Sport for Health Worldwide. In his welcoming speech, Thomas Bach, President of IOC said, “Today world needs the power of sport more than ever, and the reforms of Olympic Savoy Hotel, Lausanne Agenda 2020 provide a clear vision of how we can increase the impact of sport on society”. Francesco Ricci Bitti, the President of Sport Accord Convention, stressed the fact that this year International Olympic Committee has been successfully working with International Federations drawing on their knowledge and experience to improve the Anti-Doping Process. Dr. Rukhledev had working meetings with the Chair of the IOC Medical & Scientific Commission and IOC Vice President Prof. Ugur Erdener and Mr. Franscesco Ricci Bitti, President ASOIF and SportAccord Convention. OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF ICSD President and Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Met in Istanbul In the meeting between the Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Akif Çagatay Kiliç and the ICSD President Dr. Rukhledev at the Istanbul, the Minister stated, “the Preparation and Regulation Board will appoint a coordinator for the Samsun Deaflympics 2017, who will swiftly surmount the shortcomings for the preparation of the event.” In his speech Dr. Rukhledev, started off by sharing his gratitude for the Turkish Youth and Sports Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Akif Minister Akif Çagatay Kiliç. He also expressed his Çagatay Kiliç and ICSD President Dr. satisfaction regarding the progress that has been Rukhledev made on infrastructure for the 2017 Summer Deaflympics in Samsun. Dr. Rukhledev, however, further mentioned that there is a foreseeable potential for drawbacks caused by organisational tardiness and in order for Samsun Deaflympics 2017 to go swiftly and ultimately for it to be a success, he will provide support with the expertise and the proficiency of the ICSD. He concluded his remarks by stating, “Even though there are many “bumps” laying ahead on the road for 2017 Deaflympics, he has no doubt that the ICSD and the Turkish Government will accomplish this endeavour by working together.” The attitudes and statements of some local federation authorities before and after the meeting with the esteemed Minister were the unfortunate part of the successful meeting in Istanbul. Turkey edged out Argentina to be the host of 2017 Deaflympics Games, just by a fraction of an inch in 2013. Samsun Deaflympics 2017 will be an especially significant event since it will have the most sport disciplines and attending nations than any other event in Turkish history. It is also expected that with an unprecedented number of athletes partaking in the history of Deaflympics, the total number of athletes will surpass that of the Paralympic Games and will become the second biggest sports organisation that is open for every country and continent after the Olympics. www.ciss.org! OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF AFFILIATED MEMBERS OF ICSD Confederation of African Deaf Sport (CADS) Election Results and New Board (2016-2020) ICSD is pleased to announce the results of the 2016 CADS Board election during 2nd Confederation of African Deaf Sport (CADS) General Assembly. It was successfully held on 29 October 2016 at Garden Court OR Tambo International Airport Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa. The ICSD held the workshop / leadership training as an important part of the CADS General Assembly on 27-30 October 2016. The workshop was set to train future leaders of the CADS and member countries on how to run Deaf Sports in general. The CADS General Assembly concluded the workshop with an announcement of the Board election results. The following CADS Executive Board Members were duly elected: 1. Mr Mohamed Madoun, Algeria – CADS President 2. Mr Lamin Ceesay, Gambia – CADS Vice President 3. Ms Shirley Keoagile, Botswana - EB Member 4. Mr Alemayehu Teferi, Ethiopia - EB Member 5. Mr Nouhoum Keita, Mali - EB Member 6. Mr Julius Maxajwe, South Africa - EB Member The 7th position is reserved for a Woman representative of which the EB will search from around Africa. This process will start as soon as the EB resolves some CADS administrative issues. The composition of the CADS EB is distributed in terms of zonal representation as follows: 1. North - Algeria 2. OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF In the near future, the CADS Executive Board will assess the current CADS situation and external factors influencing its operations and will provide members of the CADS with a report on the strategic plans. The General Assembly agrees that all of the issues that had occurred with CADS from last year should be put into the past. With the newly elected members, the welfare of the CADS operation is now expected to be in good hands. The members will ensure that the strong emphasis on reasonable and balanced operations of the CADS will result in CADS financial and organisational success from now on. ICSD expresses the gratitude South African Deaf Sports Federation for its excellent work with the organisation of the CADS General Assembly. OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF 2013 BEST SPORTSMEN AND SPORTSWOMEN AWARD FINALISTS Simon CHERONO - Athletics (Kenya) WINNER with 67 points Born 24.07.1989, Simon Cherono of Kenya 2013 turned in impressive series of performances at the 2013 Deaflympics in Sofia, winning individual gold medals in the following events: - 1500m - 5000m - 10000m In addition to winning the gold medals, Simon also set new records in the following events: - 5000m (14:02.90 – World and Deaflympics Record) - 10000m (29:16.00 – Deaflympics Record) Cherono was clearly the men"s athletics star in a competition of high quality in which 16 World Records, 19 World Junior Records and 37 Deaflympic Records had been set.
