Broderick As we worked to finalize this issue of our newsletter, Kent Island was hit in the early hours of July 24 by a terrible, VICE PRESIDENT destructive tornado. Our hearts and prayers go out to our Harold Wilson friends, neighbors and members in Bay City, Ellendale and parts of Stevensville whose homes and properties were de- RECORDING SECRETARY stroyed or damaged. We are in awe of the massive outpouring of community support and the hundreds TREASURER of volunteers who continue to respond wherever needed. It’s a poignant reminder of Lynne Riley-Coleman the strength and spirit of the special people who call this island home and who are so ready to respond to a public need. It’s part of who we are—part of our heritage! DIRECTORS We are reminded of another time in our heritage when islanders came together Earl Chambers with that same Kent Island spirit to respond to a massive threat. This September it Linda Collier was exactly 100 years ago when the War Department wanted to take Kent Island for a John Conley weapons proving ground and bombing range at the beginning of WWI. It reminds us that this same deter- mination and spirit is as strong today as it has ever been. We are proud to call ourselves Kent Islanders. PAST PRESIDENTS As far as Heritage Society news, spring and summer have been active. We have Marian Steuart 75-77 Gordon Seward 77-79 completed several maintenance projects at the Kirwan House that were supported by Julius Grollman 79-81 the Queen Anne’s County Garden Club and the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland.
