The government of Hungary has helped our university, through a privileged tender, to be able to remember this jubilee worthy. With the support of the ‘University of Pécs 650 Jubilee’ tender, we organized an international conference on 12–13 October 2017 at the impressive location of the Granary Visitor Information Centre of the Bishopric of Pécs. 21 Cen- tral and Eastern European experts from Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Slovakia, and many Hungarian university history re- searchers have presented their research results from the Middle Ages to the present day. This volume contains the lectures that were given there. The written mate- rial of the lectures will be published as Volume 16 of the ‘Publications of the University Library of Pécs’ series at the end of 2017, in which 12 German and 7 English studies were given. The University Library of Pécs and Centre for Learning – as the program owners of the conference and the book volume, in close cooperation with the University of Pécs Faculty of Humanities Institute of History Department of Medieval and Early Modern History and the University of Pécs Archives – or- ganized a successful international conference presenting the latest scientific achievements of Hungarian and European higher education history research. This volume, which the readers hold in their hand, contains a summary of this scientific meeting. Several colleagues have contributed to both the organiza- tion of the conference, the editing of the volume and the revising of foreign language texts. I would therefore offer to the attention of our Dear Readers the 16th volume of the ‘Publications of the University Library of Pécs’ series, in which we present – in the spirit of the 650th jubilee – the results of the latest Euro- pean and Hungarian scientific university history research for the general public. Ágnes Fischer-Dárdai ] Greetings Prof. Dr. József Bódis Rector, University of] Pécs Dear Distinguished Guests, Your Excellency, Dear Director-General, Dear Colleagues, n behalf of the University of Pécs and in the name of all university citi- zens I’d like to welcome all of you at this very important scientific con- Oference. Distinguished guests, you are hosted by the oldest university of Hun- gary of which foundation date goes back to 1367. Our university was founded by the famous Hungarian king Anjou Louis the Great and this foundation was supported by the papal decree. Our university was among the first four univer- sities in the Central European region after Prague, Kraków and Vienna. Few centuries later, the modern University of Pécs was established in 2000 as the merger of former universities. The first pillars were the Medical Univer- sity of Pécs, the Janus Pannonius University and the Teacher Training Centre of Szekszárd. Today, our university consists of 10 faculties and a great medical centre, we have about 20 000 students and we have about 4000 international students who came from 105 different countries from all over the world.
