This iconic drama, which first appeared on the National Theatre stage in 1979 and was later turned into an Oscar winning film, follows rowdy young musical prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Adam Gillen, Fresh Meat, Benidorm) who arrives in Vienna with his wife Constanze (Karla Crome, Misfits) determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, Court Composer Antonio Salieri Lucian Msamati (Game of Thrones, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) has the power to promote his talent or destroy it. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music and, ultimately, with God. Launched in 2009, National Theatre Live broadcasts have been seen by an audience of over 6.5 million people at 2500 venues in over 60 countries. The first season began in June 2009 with the acclaimed production of Phédre starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren. Recent broadcasts include Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet, Tom Hiddleston in Coriolanus, Gillian Anderson in A Streetcar Named Desire, James Corden in One Man, Two Guvners, Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein and War Horse. Amadeus is still showing in selected cinemas across the UK and internationally as part of National Theatre Live.
