The companies were National Semiconductor (now Texas Instruments), Intel Malaysia, Hewlett-Packard (now Agilent), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Bosch, Clarion, Litronix (now Osram) and Hitachi (now Renesas). This mature industry continues to grow with the adoption of new, innovative, and advanced technology. Malaysia today is a major player in the fast-expanding E&E market, of which major export destinations include Singapore, Hong Kong, the USA, PRC, Japan and Europe. Local industry champions operate alongside multinational companies (MNCs) from the USA, Japan, the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Republic of Korea, and a number of European countries, manufacturing products ranging from semiconductor devices to consumer and industrial electronics. Clarion Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Texas Instruments Agilent Osram Renesas Intel Malaysia Bosch Also known as the 8 Samurais, these were the first foreign E&E companies to set up production facilities in Malaysia The industry acts as a catalyst in the development of all other industries due to its propensity for innovation, firm commitment to capital investment, and substantial funding for research and development (R&D). This enhances the industry’s value chain, the development of a pool of product design talent, and the training of employees who can address issues such as Intellectual Property (IP) protection, licensing, and R&D spending. 5 Five decades and beyond Malaysia attracte inestents tr larintensie rects aie at recin nelyent srte y a siness The rienly ernent Manactrers cncentrate n sile cnents seicnctr arts an seincen 1970s electrical rcts s te lcal canies atre an aine eerience te instrys sisticatin in acinin eient re in tane The e canies ean t anactre cnser electrnics arts an cnents an t n asselyrelate r e sre 1980s ean r cnser electrnics ensre tat anactrin as n an ar traectry. anies ean t estalis esin an eelent centres t enae in seicnctr acain eelent The anactrin rcess eelent an esin actiities n te anactre s tat inate te era ere ice an 1990s cter eient inclin iss t cater t te in aret ean Malaysia e te ale cain T stay cetitie actries ele r ile li eratins t ii 2010 lle eratins aer aricatin canies cntine t estalis an ean teir acilities in Malaysia rter sitinin te natin an te lal t erters caterin t te reinal an lal ean r seicnctrs e ernent tr M as een encrain anactrers t estalis re an centres centres ecellence lal rcreent centres listic centres an s in Malaysia anactrers are crrently elrin te siness tential tat can e erie r ne rt areas sc as erce tatin an acceleratin te e Current tars nstry y sciety an instry alie Tay is sin ean r re aance seicnctr eices sc as sensrs resistrs an transceiers t el te instry t at iitisatin an iitalisatin aie at ire rctiity rit an cetitieness e anactrin sace is elin as re an re canies e int re nleeintensie itec innatie an ieralea actiities it te aailaility a sisticate talent l sc as in te interate circit esin seent Malaysia is reay t sit rars int te eelent atns eicles sart acines an rtics an ter tins Future ries e tre rtnities as te ey tecnly tat ill rie te eerence a llycnnecte nstry sciety an ecny AI’s tre inance ill el cnities t ae accrate ecisins e t recise recastin caailities an siness rcess tiisatins tre instry eatrens are recast t e sae eaily y te aanceents ae y nstry illars 6 Evolution of Malaysia`s Higher value-added Sensors, Consumer products/activities, Internet Of Things, Cloud Computing, Autonomous vehicles, Electronics electronics parts R&D, IC and System Design Robotic servants, to full assembly Wafer fab, Ingot growing Wireless Electronics, Nano Technology, Telekinesis, Industry Low volume, high Virtual Reality, E&E industry in Malaysia: complexity and high mixed SMART Electronics, 3D Integration, Artificial Intelligence, Office and computer products (e.g. instrument, Smart Machines equipment (inc. medical, aerospace), Smart Grid, Started in 1970 hard disk drives) Digital consumer goods (e.g. Advanced Energy, Storage, Fablite, with companies Blu-Ray player, HDTV-LED 8 flatscreen, e-book reader) Fabless, Miniaturisation, Electric Vehicle (EV) Simple components, semiconductor parts assembly and SKD electrical products Consumer Components: electronics: AMD, Agilent, Intel, Future Clarion and Osram, Renesas Current Bosch and Texas Instruments 2010 Malaysia ranks 7th 1990 in Global E&E exporters (World Trade Atlas) 1980 1970 !
