Phone lines for electronic transmissions are available on request. 2009-10 PREVIEW For Bellarmine coach David Smith, the 2009-10 Bellarmine Uni- versity women’s basketball team is similar to a high school chem- istry project--he has been given a lot of unknowns and now must experiment to find out exactly what he has. Only three players return from the 2008-09 squad, leaving eight new faces on the 2010 version of the Knights. Returnees include senior Destiny Mattingly and sophomores Kylie Brady and Allison Matheis. The trio combined for nearly 16 points a game last year for a team that averaged 78.7. A successful recruiting recruiting class has brought in six tal- ented freshmen, and Coach Smith signed two transfers over the summer: former University of Kentucky Wildcat Brittany Edelen and Melissa Fitz of Upper Iowa University. As Coach Smith begins his experiment, he will likely start with the point guard position, where Brady is the most known com- modity. The sophomore from Elizabethtown got 12 starts a year ago and averaged eight points a game while maintaining an as- sist to turnover ratio of about two to one. The next piece of the puzzle is inserting Edelen into the starting lineup as a forward. The senior from Springfield, Ky., possesses great athleticism and was a prolific scorer at Washington County High School when she played mostly inside. Coach Smith will probably elect to employ a three-guard lineup again this season, and competing for starting positions in the backcourt along with Brady will be Fitz, a sophomore from Min- neapolis, Minn., Matheis, a sophomore from DuBois, Ind., and Mattingly, a senior from Versailles, Ky.
