Protect cucurbit crops from Papaya ringspot virus with resistant hybrids At Syngenta Vegetable Seeds, we invest heavily in research and development to meet grower needs and help overcome challenges. Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) threatens papaya and cucurbits in all regions of the world where these crops are cultivated. To help growers address this challenge, recently introduced Syngenta squash varieties including Grandprize, Everglade, Spineless Supreme, San Martin, Ebano and Payload exhibit intermediate resistance to PRSV. This resistance will restrict the growth and development of PRSV in crops, resulting in healthier plants and higher yield and profit potentials. What is PRSV? PRSV Incidence in Trial Varieties PRSV is a pathogenic plant virus of the genus Potyvirus that is transmitted mechanically and by aphids. Leaves infected with PRSV show intense mosaic with a narrowing of the leaves and stunting. Plants that become infected with PRSV at an early age experience stunted plant growth that often results in limited yields, whereas plants that become infected at a later age tend to produce unmarketable crops of deformed fruit. SUSCEPTIBLE LIONESS GRANDPRIZE Source: May 2018, Naples, FL Enhanced resistance for higher yields than the competition Through lab tests comparing Syngenta’s intermediately resistant varieties to competing varieties, our pathologists found that Syngenta varieties exhibited less PRSV infestation, demonstrated better leaf health and produced no distorted fruits. These trial results confirm that growers facing PRSV pressure can confidently choose Syngenta squash varieties over competing SUSCEPTIBLE RESPECT EVERGLADE products to achieve maximum marketable yields.
