The highway network is amongst the largest and most visible of our community assets. The Council maintains more than 500km of roads, 1.7M sqm. of footways, 249 highway structures and 17,500 lighting columns. The highway network is used daily by residents, businesses and visitors and is fundamental to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the borough. It helps shape the character and quality of the local area, and makes an important contribution to wider Council priorities including supporting businesses, improving housing, health and well-being, safeguarding vulnerable people and making the most efficient use of available budgets. The Council recognises that it is crucial that the local highway network is managed in the most effective way, a view shared by residents and highway users who see this as a high priority area of work. This Highway Asset Management Strategy defines the approach to maintaining assets in order to provide the best possible service to all highway users.
