Opening Business 1.1 Opening Prayer The meeting was opened with prayer led by Trustee Petrella. 1.2 Attendance – As noted above. 1.3 Approval of the Agenda Chair Szeman advised that a report titled, “Appointment of Audit Committee Member”, would be added as Item 5.4. Moved by: Rick Petrella Seconded by: Bonnie McKinnon THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approves the agenda of the February 25, 2014 meeting, as amended. Carried 1.4 Declaration of Interest – Nil 2. Presentations Chair Szeman extended the Board’s congratulations to the players and support staff of the Assumption College School Lions Senior Football Team on capturing the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Football Bowl Championship. This is the first OFSAA title for any secondary school in our district. Certificates of accomplishments were accepted by Greg Picone, school principal, and Lesley Young, Teacher Advisor for the team. 3. Consent Agenda 4.1 THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approves the minutes of the January 28, 2014 meeting. 4.2 THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School receives the unapproved minutes of the January 21, 2014 Committee of the Whole meeting. Moved by: Rick Petrella Seconded by: Bonnie McKinnon THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board receives all reports and approves all motions under the Consent Agenda. Carried 5. Committee and Staff Reports 5.1 Child Care Modernization Act 2013 Superintendent Telfer provided an overview of new legislation, the Child Care Modernization Act 2013 (Bill 143) which, if passed, will govern child care provision in Ontario. She commented that since schools are easily accessible to most families, they have been identified by the government as essential public resources and are ideal locations for housing accessible child care and early years programs and services to support families and to contribute to the healthy development of children. The implementation of Full Day Kindergarten, before and after school care programs, and the ongoing conversion of child care spaces for infants and toddlers are all examples of this modernization initiative. Moved by: Bonnie McKinnon Seconded by: Rick Petrella THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School receives the Child Care Modernization Act 2013 report. Carried 5.2 School Year Calendar 2014-15 Superintendent Chopp presented the proposed elementary and secondary school year calendars for 2014-15, both of which have 194 school days, including six Professional Activity (PA) days, with ten exam days at the secondary level. Staff consulted with the Grand Erie District School Board to co-ordinate calendars in order to achieve efficiencies in transportation, with one secondary PA day not aligning. Moved by: Dennis Blake Seconded by: Bonnie McKinnon THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approves the proposed 2014-15 School Year Calendars for Elementary and Secondary schools. Carried 4 of 20 Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board Minutes Catholic Education Centre 322 Fairview Drive Brantford, ON N3T 5M8 5.3 Excursion – Massillon, OH Superintendent Chopp reviewed a request from St. John’s College for approximately 45 members of the Senior Football Eagles team to play an exhibition game against Massillon Tigers Washington High School, take part in a football retreat, and visit the NFL Football Hall of Fame. Moved by: Bonnie McKinnon Seconded by: Rick Petrella THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approves the request from St. John’s College for an excursion to Massillon, Ohio from Thursday, September 18 to Saturday, September 20, 2014. Carried 5.4 Appointment of Audit Committee Member Superintendent Grice advised that three candidates were interviewed for the vacant volunteer External Committee member position on the Audit Committee. Christine Shea has been appointed for a three-year term as the Committee’s new member. Moved by: Rick Petrella Seconded by: Dennis Blake THAT the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approves the appointment of Christine Shea to the Audit Committee for the term February 1, 2014 to January 31, 2017. Carried 5.5 Student Trustee Report Student Trustee Athanasiou reported that the recent Student Senate’s Leadership Winter Retreat, which brought together members of all Students’ Councils, was a great success. She also reported on two provincial Ontario Student Trustees’ Association (OSTA) conferences that she has attended, which provide student trustees with opportunities for networking and professional development. One initiative of the Catholic Board Council, which is part of OSTA, is a province-wide mass for all secondary school students scheduled for May 7, 2014. Student Trustee Athanasiou also reported on Valentine’s Day activities held at all secondary schools. Information and Correspondence Chair Szeman requested that trustees provide Director Roehrig with questions they would like addressed during the upcoming Ontario College of Teachers’ presentation to trustees scheduled for April 15, 2014.
