Researchers dubbed this new molecule “halicin” after the fictional artificial intelligence system from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. When tested against dozens of bacterial strains isolated from patients and grown in lab dishes, it killed treatment-resistant bacterial strains, most likely by disrupting their currently funded ability to maintain an electrochemical gradient across their cell membranes. The researchers identified several other promising antibiotic candidates that they plan to test further.
