ALLOWABLE AND NON ALLOWABLE SPURS FOR EVENTING FEI RULE Article 538.1.3 Spurs a) General - Spurs are optional for all three Tests. Spurs capable of wounding a Horse are forbidden. Spurs must be of smooth material (metal or plastic). If there is a shank it must not be more than four centimetres long (the overall shank must be measured from the boot to the end of the spur) and must point only towards the rear. The end of the shank must be blunt to prevent wounding a Horse. If the shank is curved, the spurs must be worn only with the shank directed downwards. Metal or plastic spurs with round hard plastic or metal knobs “Impulse spurs" and “Dummy spurs” with no shank are allowed. b) Rowel Spurs - Spurs with rowels are allowed only for the Dressage and Jumping Tests and when practising/warming up for Dressage and Jumping. MEASURING LENGTH OF SPUR NO LONGER THAN 4CM FROM BOOT TO END OF SPUR DUMMY SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES ROWEL SPUR ALLOWED IN DRESSAGE AND SHOW JUMPING NOT ALLOWED IN CROSS COUNTRY PHASE DUMMY SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES DUMMY SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES SOFT TOUCH HORIZONTAL SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES VERTICAL SOFT TOUCH ROWEL IS ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES SWAN NECK SPUR ALLOWED IN ANY PHASES CAN HAVE A ROWEL AND IF SO ONLY ALLOWED IN DRESSAGE AND SHOWJUMPING ONLY PRINCE OF WALES SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES IMPULS SPUR ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE CAN ALSO HAVE A FLAT DISC INSTEAD OF DOME SHAPE IMPULS SOFT TOUCH BALL SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES HAMMERHEAD SPUR ALLOWED IN ALL PHASES SPURSUADER SPURS NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE JUMPING SPUR NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE DAISY ROWEL SPUR NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE HORIZONTAL SPRENGER ROWEL SPUR NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE SMALL SEGMENTED ROWEL SPUR NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE DRESSAGE SPURS WITH TINES NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE OFFSET SPURS NOT ALLOWED IN ANY PHASE THE SMART CLIX SPURS ARE CURRENTLY BEING TRIALLED BY THE FEI The same rules apply for the type of spur i.e. rowel, dummy etc for Eventing. .
