Jumbo Shrimp left fielder Peter O’Brien homered to left field in a career-best fourth straight game to give Jacksonville (25-35) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Biloxi right-hander Cody Ponce (3-4). Biloxi (37-25) answered in the top of the third inning, when Shuckers All-Star left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. hit a game-tying home run to left field off Jacksonville All-Star right-hander Nick Neidert (6-4). Jacksonville retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against Ponce. Shortstop Mason Davis hit a one- out single to right field and went to third base when center fielder Cade Gotta hit a two-out single to right field. Gotta stole second base – his Southern League-best 17th steal – before second baseman Isan Diaz hit a go-ahead, two-run single to left field. With a 3-1 lead, Neidert allowed a sixth-inning leadoff single to Stokes, and a fielder’s choice put second baseman Keston Hiura at first base. Shuckers third baseman Lucas Erceg hit a two-out RBI triple to left-center field, and Hager hit a go-ahead, two-run home run to left field off Neidert, who allowed a season-high four earned runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings. Left-hander Miguel Del Pozo pitched a perfect seventh. Right-hander Zech Lemond went the final two innings, allowing Erceg’s sacrifice fly and Hager’s second home run in the eighth inning to make it 6-3. After Ponce allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five innings, right-hander Luis Ortiz began the sixth inning with a 4-3 lead. He retired the first seven batters and did not allow a hit until Davis’ two-out single in the ninth inning, working the final four scoreless innings with one walk and one hit batter to record his second save. O’Brien, acquired by the Marlins in a trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1, homered in the final two games of the Barons series, and the first two games of this series against the Shuckers. This is the first time in O’Brien’s career that he has homered in four straight games. O’Brien had also homered in three straight games earlier this year with Double-A Tulsa from May 12-14, and he homered in three straight games from April 24-26 with Triple-A Reno in 2016, April 20-22 and July 29-31 with Triple-A Reno in 2015, and in 2013 from June 4-6 with Single-A Charleston in 2013. I is for Isan: Second baseman Isan Diaz carries a season-long six game hitting streak into today’s game against the Shuckers. Over his streak, Diaz has hit .550 (11-for-20) with six runs batted in. Diaz has had three multi-hit games during this streak, as well as three multi-RBI games, including last night’s game. Over his past 10 games, Diaz is hitting .394 with eight RBI and has seen his average raised from .193 to .233. Diaz is in his first year playing at the Double-A level, and he is the Marlins No. 8 prospect according to MLB.com. Seven Shrimp All-Stars: The Southern League announced that six Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp players have been named to the league’s South Division All-Star roster for the 2018 Southern League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 19, at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Right-handed pitchers Nick Neidert and Pablo Lopez, left-handed pitcher Jose Quijada, catcher Rodrigo Vigil, designated hitter Eric Jagielo, and outfielder Monte Harrison will represent Jacksonville as South Division All-Stars. Left-handed pitcher Jeff Kinley was also added to the South Division All-Star Roster earlier today by the Southern League. The Shuckers are Here: This is the second of four series this season between Jacksonville and Biloxi. Earlier this season, the Jumbo Shrimp were swept by the Shuckers in early May at MGM Park in Biloxi. The next two meetings will be in Jacksonville from June 8-12 and in the second half from July 12-16. The Jumbo Shrimp will not make a return trip to Biloxi until August 6-12. Last season the Jumbo Shrimp and Shuckers played five series, with Jacksonville going 9-15 in those games. That included a 6-9 record in Biloxi, and the Shrimp were 3-6 against the Shuckers in Jacksonville. The Jumbo Shrimp did win their last series here in late August, including a key doubleheader sweep on August 30 that shrunk Jacksonville’s magic number to clinch the second half South Division title from five to one, and the Shrimp clinched a playoff berth the next day with a win at home against the Blue Wahoos. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), RHP Pablo Lopez (21), and John Norwood (30).
