Byron H. Hartman 陈德柏瑞 12518 Manifesto Pl San Diego CA USA [email protected] Personal Statement Byron Hartman (b. February 1978) is an American Taijiquan teacher and biomedical research scientist. He is a 12th generation direct-line successor of Chen Family Taijiquan (lineage name Chen De Bai Rui (陈德柏瑞)). His Shifu is Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei (陈正雷; b. May 1949), one of China’s living legends and 11th generation direct-line successor of Chen Taijiquan. Byron began studying Chen style Taijiquan in 2001 at Indiana University, Bloomington, with Master Guo Lei, before moving to Seattle to attend graduate school at the University of Washington. Byron began studying with Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei in 2004 and has since trained more than five hundred hours with Chen Zhenglei in seminars and private lessons throughout North America and China. Byron was strongly drawn to Chen Zhenglei as a teacher and mentor and pursued his studies with sincere respect, diligence and perseverance. Byron began teaching in 2005 at Grandmaster Chen’s request and has been continuously teaching part-time ever since, first in Seattle and now in the San Francisco Bay Area. Grandmaster Chen has frequently called upon Byron to assist in teaching and perform in demonstrations to represent the family system. Byron is assisted by his wife, Yukiko Kawabata Hartman (由起子), a licensed psychotherapist and a long-time practitioner of Taijiquan.
