Designing Stencil Font in Devanagari Script

Project 3 Designing stencil font in Devanagari script Nikhil Muthal Guide - Prof. GV Sreekumar Introduction • Stencil typefaces are typeface with slits in their strokes • Adding tracking or slits will make it more effective for spray paint and rough planking • If the same content has to be printed over and over again on different places or surfaces, the easiest method is to make stencil of that content. This method has been in use traditionally since long back. 02 Problem statement • To create a set of stencil which can be used by sign-board painters to create Devanagari letter forms with improved legibility and to supplement it with digital font. • To increase readability and harmony of the Devanagari font which is used traditionally in India. 03 Context of stencil typeface • Train, Buses, Metro, Armed force vehicles 04 • Post box, Post office,Product packaging • Surface where traditional printing is not possible & used by untrained workers 05 Scope of project • Though the technology has developed, traditional method of using stencil to write public notices is still in use by peoples. • This is an attempt at creating a typeface which is designed especially for use of stencil and to standardize the random usage of fonts. 06 Design Methodology Trial mock up 07 Challanges • Legibility • Ink trap • Counter form • Letter Spacing • Smudging of ink • Overlapping of strokes • Complexity of letters 08 Design process • Initially I started with handwritten exercise and understanding anatomy of devanagari letter, which are in complex in nature Then I jumped on sketching part of the glyphs 09 Initial handwritten glyphs sketches 10 Terminology Dimension & guideline 11 Terminology of font Basic tool - Mono linear font Construction - Broken (Stencil) 12 Curves - Oval Turn - Curvilinear Counter - Open counter Vertical steam - Parallel 13 Stem to neck joineries -Acute Curve joineries - Un-looped Vertical terminal - Horizontal Horizontal terminal - Vertical 14 Glyph design Initial glyphs 15 Suggestion & feedback 16 Suggestion & feedback 17 Letter with multiple alternatives 18 Iterations 19 Iterations 20 Letters after iterations 21 Stencil from iteration Selected Regected 22 Spraying on glyphs 23 Final glyphs Vertical bar width - 74 Horizontal bar height - 93 24 All glyphs in FontLab 25 Fine tuning of glyphs Tuning with joineries Tuning with end terminal 26 Tuning with ink trap Tuning with middle joineries 27 Introduction 28 Letter with different matras 29 Conjuncts, matras Introduction 30 Alternatives & extra letters Introduction 31 Letter KA with AA matras Introduction 32 Letter AA with matras Introduction 33 Word composition (18pt) Introduction 34 Word composition Introduction 35 Word composition Introduction 36 Word composition (15 Pt - 40pt) Introduction 37 Output after final glyphs design 38 Possible application Image of stencil font on wall Before After 39 Image of stencil font on bus Before After 40 Image of stencil font on local Before After 41 Image of stencil font on toilet wall Before After 42 Image on rough surface Before After 43 Image of stencil font rough wall 44 References 1. http://www.typoday.in/2017/spk_papers/pallavi-shedge-typo day-2017.pdf 2. https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Mukta 3. https://www.indiantypefoundry.com/designers/hitesh-malaviya 4. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/detail/mobile/ snail-mail-indian-postal-services/?ordering=-uploaded_at&fil ters= 5. http://www.dsource.in/tool/devft/en/terminology.php 6.
