03 October 2018 Dean Schmidt Alcoa Anglesea Dear Dean Airborne particulate monitoring at the DELWP site in Camp Road, Anglesea prior to and during explosive demolition of the Alcoa Anglesea Power Station boiler structure. Environmental Health Solutions (EHS) carried out real-time atmospheric monitoring of the PM10 and PM2.5 particulate fractions of ambient air at the above site over the described period has been undertaken at the request of Alcoa and the Victorian EPA. PM10 is defined as particulate matter 10 micrometers or less in diameter; PM2.5 is particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. PM2.5 is generally described as fine particles. The National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure 2015 (NEPM) 3 3 documents air quality standards of 50 µg/m averaged over 24 hours for PM10 and 25 µg/m averaged over 24 hours for PM2.5. The results of the PM10 and PM2.5 particulate monitoring during the period potentially impacted by the explosive demolition of the Alcoa Anglesea Power Station boiler structure (essentially between 13:15 and 13:30 hours on Wednesday October 3, 2018) can be compared to the previous results collected when the activity was not occurring, as well as compared with the relevant NEPM standards. The results (attached) indicate that at the monitoring location the measured particulate concentrations were identical before, during and two hours following the explosive demolition. PM10 concentrations over the 24-hour period 15:30 on 2/10/2018 to 15:30 on 3 3 3/10/2018 was 8 µg/m and for PM2.5 for the same period was 7 µg/m . This indicates that the demolition had no measurable impact with regards to dust at the location. Also, of interest, EHS carried out personal airborne asbestos dust monitoring on seven sentries positioned around the demolition site during the detonation. The attached results show no asbestos fibres detected above the detection limit of the method.
