PREFACE THIS Volume contains the first portion (from A to L) of a Calendar of all the Lancashire and Cheshire and other Wills and Administrations proved at Chester during the years 1801 to 1810, both inclusive. The Calendar forms a continuation of the Calendars of Wills commenced by the Society more than thirty years ago, the list having been brought down to the year 1800 by the publication, some ten years ago, of Volume XLV. Under the permission granted by the President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Court to calendar the Wills at Chester up to a period of 100 years from date, the Wills for the ten years to 1810 have recently become available and the calendar has been made at once, as it is believed that these lists of Wills have been the most generally useful and popular of all the Society's publications. As there were nearly 17,000 Wills proved in this period, it has been found necessary to divide the Calendar into two volumes, the first, containing the letters A to L, being the present volume; the second, covering M to Z, will be issued as soon as possible. Hitherto the "Infra" Wills (those where the personalty was under £4o) have been separately calendared, no doubt because they were proved in a separate Court, but there does not seem to be any material advantage in following this course, and m the present calendar the "Infra" Wills are included am are distinguished by being printed in italics. It has been necessary to give the day and month of probate well as the year, because from the beginning of the nineteenth tury the documents are filed at the Registry under their •respective months. Price of 10 *pei lerrace, Chester. 1 's believed that the members of the Society have now viii Preface in their hands a more complete set of Calendars of Wills than those of any other Society, and the Society's grateful thanks are due to the President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Court, and to Herbert A. Jenner, Esq., Registrar of the District Probate Registry at Chester, for enabling the Society to continue the Calendars to the year 1810. The " Infra" Wills are printed in italics. A.W. signifies an Administration with the Will annexed. A.W.C. signifies an Administration with the Will and Codicil annexed. C. signifies Will and Codicil. C.C. signifies Will and two Codicils, and so on. T. or Tuit. signifies Tuition. "P.R; 1866" signifies that a subsequent grant was made in 1866 (or whatever date is given) out of the Principal Registry at Somerset House after the Will had been originally proved in (he Consistory Court at Chester. " D.R. 1866" signifies that a subsequent grant was made in 1866 (or whatever date is given) out of the District Registry at Chester after the Will had been originally proved in the Consistory Court at Chester.
