Palermo, Chair 850/561-5669 Consumer Protection Law Committee www.FLORIDABAR.org July 31, 2020 Hello, Consumer Protection Law Committee members! As chair of this committee, I am excited to welcome you and invite you to make a difference throughout the year ahead. We have a great group of people who are dedicated to their profession, this committee and to the consumers in Florida. This year, I will be assisted by three outstanding vice chairs: Victoria Butler, Charles Geitner, and Beth Norrow, and each member of the committee will have the opportunity to take on further leadership roles in the subcommittees. It is our committee’s mission to educate consumers and The Florida Bar about consumer protection laws and related current issues by providing public outreach events, public service messages, CLE programs, consumer publications, and non-partisan technical assistance memoranda on proposed legislation and expert resources for The Florida Bar, the Judiciary, and the Legislature. The Consumer Protection Law Committee is a standing committee of the Bar that has been around for more than 40 years and has built a strong track record of delivering results. Together, we: ▪ Present seminars during The Florida Bar Annual Convention to introduce and educate practitioners to the much-in-demand field of consumer protection law. ▪ Maintain a social media presence on Facebook. ▪ Create and maintain educational pamphlets for consumers and attorneys in 47 areas of law and practice. ▪ Update a bench manual produced by the committee on consumer protection topics. ▪ Communicate concerns and assist lawmakers with proposed legislation. ▪ Award The Florida Bar Consumer Protection Lawyer of the Year Award. Our mission is carried out through the work of our excellent subcommittees, so it is vital that we all actively participate in at least one subcommittee. I have had the great pleasure and honor of serving on this committee for the past four years and have worked on meaningful projects to advance our mission. 1(2) THE FLORIDA BAR Subcommittees Please review the list below and reply by email to our staff liaison Zannah Lyle ([email protected]) by 5 p.m., Aug. 14, with your subcommittee preference(s). If you do not communicate a preference, you will be assigned to a subcommittee. Please include your first and second choice subcommittees and let us know if you are willing to serve on more than one subcommittee and if you are willing to take a leadership role on a subcommittee. These are our subcommittees: ▪ CLE – Plans and organizes the CPLC seminar held at the Bar Annual Convention. ▪ Data Privacy and Cybersecurity – Monitors and shares insight into the latest developments in this evolving area affecting businesses and consumers. ▪ Legislative – Monitors legislation of interest to consumers and spearheads efforts to contact lawmakers. ▪ Outreach and Social Media – Manages the committee’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, organizes public events, and develops community outreach opportunities. ▪ Judicial – Updates a manual for judges produced by the committee on consumer-related issues as well as explores how this committee can best assist the members of The Florida Bar. ▪ Pamphlets – Updates The Florida Bar's consumer pamphlets, which need to be reviewed and updated every two years. ▪ Awards (Consumer Protection Lawyer of the Year) – Ensures a strong pool of nominees when the call is issued for nominations each winter. Reviews nominees and proposes a winner for the committee at large to name.
