Ore Solutions- Summer 2019

ORE SOLUTIONS NEWSLETTER OF CODES CENTRE FOR ORE DEPOSIT AND EARTH SCIENCES > Summer 2019 No.35 30 YEARS OF HUGE ACHIEVEMENTS As we near the end of 2019, CODES Director Professor David Cooke looks back on what has been another solid and busy year for the Centre, and reflects on its 30 years at the forefront of ore deposit research. CODES is currently celebrating 30 years of operation and I am sure our founding director, Emeritus Professor Ross Large, is as delighted as I am that the Centre continues to maintain its hard-earned status as a global leader in ore deposit research and training. CODES began operations in 1989 when Ross and his team won an Australian Research Council Key Centre grant, providing The three trainers: the 30th anniversary of the CODES Masters program was celebrated in the foundation for the establishment mid-November. Again, there was a spread of research – across economic geology, geology of Tasmania, environmental geochemistry and volcanology. Most students found Honours hard work but definitely worth it: many of those who are on the cusp of graduating have found work they know will follow through on their research interests. Left: Future promise: Johanna van Balen takes a break from collecting core samples at Copper Mines of Tasmania’s Princess Creek Tailings Storage Facility as part of her Honours research into the mineralogy and geochemical properties of tailings. Right: Digging deep: Rob James’ Honours project has involved detailed characterisation of the textures, sequence and trace element composition of sulfides in the various ore types at the Lantern Gold Deposit, Northern Territory.
