Tt..-: past year was filled with a wide range of 75th anniversary events. Faculty, staff. students, and alumni took pride in showing off their accomplishmentsand expertise. Enrollment growth is a good indication for the future. UAF is steadilyexpanding research activity, providing a stable industry that stimulates the economyof many communities in the state. Strategic Planning Leadership completed its task and has asked the UAF community to help refine our vision for the year 2000. With thatin place in 1993, UAF should be well positioned to meet increased challenges and grab a hold ofopportunities that mesh with our plan for the future. Chancellor Joan K. Wad low The 1993 edition of the Fact Book represents our continuing commitment to provide a reliable source of information about the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Fact Book can be used as a convenient reference for answering some of the most fre- quently asked questions about our institution. By examining these historical and current data, we can better anticipate and plan for the future, promote enhancement of academic programs and facilities, and provide service to the citizens of our state. Significant changes and additions have occurred in this third edition of the Fact Book due to the type of information needed this past year for the UAF budget planning effort, continuing TQM projects, implementing the strategic plan, and research initiatives from the Chancellor. Taken together. these additions will make the information in the Fact Book even more relevant in the upcoming year. Our sincere appreciation is extended to the many individuals throughout the UAF community and the State who contributed to the production of this Fact Book. We are confident that the administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the University will find this publication a convenient, authoritative, and valuable reference of general and statistical information about UAF. Putting this material together involved many judgments as to the inclusion, exclusion and form of presentation. We therefore welcome any suggestions you may have for improving future editions.
