THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY Where do my grades lead…. T Levels A levels GCSE Grades 9-4 GCSE Grades 3-1 careersguidanceandtraining.co.uk Qualifications – what to look for. A levels: • A levels are a 2 year course • You’ll likely choose 3 subjects • They can be mixed with BTEC style courses • The exams are taken at the end of year 13 • Your GCSE grades will determine how many & which A levels you are offered to take Qualifications – what to look for. Applied General: Level 3 courses BTEC/UAL/CACHE/NCFE/CamTech/WJEC • Level 3 Applied Generals are a 2 year course • They can be a single/double/triple option • Some colleges can mix them with A levels • Assessed by written exam/course work/practical • Your GCSE grades will determine which subjects you can take and what will be offered Qualifications – what to look for. T Levels: Level 3 Qualification •2 year technical qualification •Equivalent to 3 A levels (stand alone course) •900 hours study per academic year (includes 45 days of industry placement) •Pass to Distinction grading system •Education & Childcare, Construction Design, Digital (more available in the future) •Chichester College Group and East Sussex College Group and Collyer’s (check website for courses offered and further details when available) The general rule is…….. To apply for a Level 3 course you will need: • Minimum of English and Maths at 4/5 grade or above • You will need at least a total of 5 different subjects at 4/5 or above • Some A levels will require higher GCSE pass grades • Any BTECs will have to be a Merit/Distinction grade and you will still need at least 4 GCSEs at 4 grade or above including maths and English Qualifications – what to look for. BTEC Level 2 •Not all colleges offer level 2 courses •If you have not achieved a grade 4 in English / Maths this must be taken •In addition to retakes usually one other L2 Btec choice equivalent to 3 GCSEs) •Might include compulsory work experience a day a week Qualifications – what to look for. The Haywards Heath College Level 2 offer will be very different from Level 2 options at other colleges. The programme will offer: • A Vocational Qualification to support progression to Advanced Level Study or Apprenticeships with units of study covering business, travel and tourism, health and care, science and sport * • Experience of the Workplace including employer masterclasses for entrepreneurs • English and Maths GCSE retakes – as required • Academic Skills Support Sessions • Advanced Level Learning Experience in A level and Level 3 Vocational Classes Minimum Entry Requirements: A minimum of 2 3s at GCSE *Mix of units subject to change The general rule is…….. To apply for a Level 2 course you will need: • Usually either English, Maths or Science at grade 3 • Also at least 3 other at grade 3 • Any level 2 BTECs at PASS grade • Excellent attendance record from school • Positive attitude and a commitment to learning * VERY FEW COLLEGES WILL OFFER GCSE RE-SIT IN ENGLISH OR MATHS IF YOU DO NOT GET A 3 GRADE FIRST TIME, YOU WILL DO FUNCTIONAL SKILLS AND MOVE ON TO GCSE’S * The general rule is… To apply for a Level 1 course you will need: • An excellent attitude and reference from school • A commitment to learning • An understanding of the subject you are choosing and what will be expected from you • A good interview and in some cases a portfolio of your work Research the college qualifications & courses What are the range of qualifications and courses you will be looking at? Check the level of the courses you are applying for Can you do retakes with L2/L3 courses? Can you mix A levels with BTECs? Does the course include work experience? More subjects available than at GCSE In a lot of cases you do not need to have studied the subject at GCSE – however – you do need to have the correct grades to do the course. Different colleges may ask for different grades. Varndean ForGrade example 4 in math's - Psychology & + 3requirements: other GCSEs at grade 9-4 Science including English Collyer’s Grade 5 in Maths and + 2 other GCSEs at grade 9-4 Science Grade 4 in English Worthing 5 GCESs at grades 9-4 (5s in English & Maths preferred) How to Choose? Research the college and the courses using online prospectuses Watch the introductory videos on the pupil drive Get a feel – is this what you expected? Can you see yourself there? Does it feel right? Find out about the courses and talk to the staff; don’t just look around. What are the entry requirements? Explore the pastoral support, social side… List the pros and cons for later comparison THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY Minimum requirements versus maximum achievement… THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY College interviews College interviews will usually start to take place November – we do not currently know what form these interviews will take (Virtual / Face to Face). Most colleges are using email as their main form of communication, so students MUST ensure that they check the email address they put on their applications regularly. If students need to miss school…NOT A WHOLE DAY OFF SCHOOL! THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY College references • ALL references are completed by Mrs Dorgan • Sent off by the Academy • They ask for: Punctuality and attendance Effort and attitude Mock grades Appropriate courses applied for An honest review of performance at school • We do not supply ‘open’ references THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY MOST IMPORTANT • Students need to check their emails at least once a day. • This is the most practical method of contact at the moment • All careers interview dates and college/apprenticeship information will be sent out via email THE BURGESS HILL ACADEMY Routes after Year 11 What are the options? 6th Form College Further Apprenticeships Education. Training: • Recognised industry based training provided by an accredited training provider either at college, university or all on the job site. Apprenticeships Functional Skills (level 2): • English • Maths • ICT STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE IDEALLY FOUND AN EMPLOYER BEFORE THEY ARE ABLE TO START AN APPRENTICESHIP (some companies can help you find the job) Apprenticeships • Please let Mrs Dorgan know if you wish to apply for an apprenticeship. • We recommend that you apply to at least one college as a back-up – just in case you are unable to find the job to support your apprenticeship. • We will be holding a virtual “Parents Apprenticeship Information Evening” on Thursday 12th November at 6pm.
