Fall 2019 Newsletter Iron Arrow® Honor Society the HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED at the UNIVERSITY of MIAMI

Fall 2019 Newsletter Iron Arrow® Honor Society THE HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI A Message from the Chief Members of the Tribe, I am both honored and elated to serve as your Chief for the 2019 - 2020 term. I am even more excited to be a part of such a diverse group of Officers of whom are all people of color; two being women, and one a member of the the LGBTQ+ community. This fatefully happens to occur at the same time the University of Miami inaugurates a new Chair of the Board of Trustees, Hilarie Bass, whose background is law, but passion is equality for all. She is the President and Founder of the Bass Institute for Diversity and Inclusion, with a particular focus on the issues surrounding diversity and inclusion of women in senior positions the workplace. In the past year, President Photo by J.C. Ridley (IA’02) Frenk has also launched the “Culture of Belonging“ initiative that advocates to assure diversity and inclusion exists beyond the projected statistics, but are integrated into the everyday life of students, faculty and staff who call the university home. 2019-2020 OFFICERS In today’s society, the significance of equity across all platforms is heightened, and it is strategic that the key Dewayne N. Washington II leaders at the University of Miami have such conversations and issues in the forefront of their minds. From the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, to President Julio Frenk, to the Officers of the highest honor one can attain at Chief the University of Miami, the leaders of the greatest University are striving for all to have equitable and inclusive 919.600.0856 opportunities. [email protected] Over the course of the past two years, Iron Arrow has made strides in handling and addressing the complexity Emma M. Lam of cultural appropriation. We have held numerous open dialogues and signed a Memorandum of Understanding Son of Chief with the Miccosukee Tribe to revive our connection. Even further, at the request of our Indian Advisor and 305.778.6156 Sponsor, Chairman Billy Cypress and the Miccosukee Tribal Council, we have officially approved Curtis Osceola, [email protected] a Miami Business School and Miami Law School alum, as our liaison between Iron Arrow and the Miccosukee Tribal Council. Curtis has a unique position of being of direct Miccosukee descent and an active recent alumnus Cachay L. Byrd of the University, and so we are able to foster an even stronger bond with our Indian Advisor through him. Some Medicine Woman of our tapping practices have transitioned to more accurately reflect that of traditional Miccosukee practices. 786.348.3451 Cultural appropriation was a significant and complex issue, unforeseen by our founders, that has allowed us to [email protected] review, adjust and redefine the tribes purpose and role as a whole. Much credit must be given to the officers of the two previous years, as they handled the issue with great poise and diligence. It is safe to say we are at a stable ground in our efforts; however, it is important Iron Arrow continues to develop relations with the COUNCIL OF ELDERS Miccosukee and the university community at large. Myself and the current Officers are currently in the works of JOHANN A. ALI mapping out a variety of initiatives that will assure we are working diligently to do just that. CHRISTIAN DIEZ DAVID McDONALD, Sr. Iron Arrow is now better prepared to propel itself to new heights, with a goal to grow the presence of Iron Arrow, whilst safeguarding the traditions and practices of our Tribe. This does not mean growing the number BRANDON T. MITCHELL of members we tap, but instead increasing the impact the Tribe has on the university and the greater Miami ELIZABETH M. RODRIGUEZ community. In order to fulfill such a goal, we will need the time, talent and treasure of all our members, as we MICHELLE A. WILLIAMS, Esq. believe the results of our work and efforts as a Tribe will speak for itself. The Strategic Plan of the Officers will outline the initiatives we have planned to further the development of FACULTY ADVISOR diversity and inclusion, building our relations with the Miccosukee, and increasing our impact on the greater WINSTON WARRIOR community. This plan will be pubished for every member to access and familiarize themselves with.
