Between 2008 and 2016 we had over 100 teams entered in 8 of those 9 years, with 2009 having 98 teams entered. 2017 reduced to 91 and this season 86 teams are entered. There are many reasons for this reduction (TV coverage, other activities, ‘red tape’), but we will be conducting a survey with all Clubs to discover if we as a League can do more to prevent this decline. We have already started with a revamped Under 17 League, introducing coloured clothing, pink balls, flashing bails, fielding restrictions, all in the T20 format. It is however not all gloom, as at Under 7 level 2017 saw the highest number of teams entered in our Annual competition at Spofforth. The challenge is to keep those young Under 7 players, playing and enjoying cricket through to Under 17 level, and beyond into senior cricket. All of us reading and using this Handbook are already committed to junior cricket, but we must encourage more participation. I hope that Clubs will work hard to encourage more volunteers, and that it is not left to the ‘same few’ to run all of your teams. As always the League and Club officials perform a vital role in the continued success of the League, so I urge you to give them your full support, and on behalf of the League I wish to thank all Officials and wish them well in the year ahead. Mick Dawson continues as League Secretary, so the administration of both the Outdoor and Indoor Leagues is in safe hands. We are delighted that The Logshed and DAC Sports have agreed to continue their sponsorship in 2018, and we hope that you will support them in the same way that they are supporting junior cricket. We thank them both for their financial support of junior cricket. The Taverners representative teams, under the guidance of Emma Lyons, continue to progress, and the League funds are solidly controlled by Peter Walker, with a solid balance In Hand at the 2017 Year End. So it continues to be a very exciting time for all Clubs with Junior Set-Ups, and I would, as always, encourage any Clubs without Junior Teams to really look at establishing one for the future benefit of cricket in the area. So we must remain positive as the Junior League is still strong with 86 teams. Look back just over 20 years and only 53 teams were in the Junior League, but we must face up to the challenge and continue to help progress this wonderful game which will give our junior players of today such an enjoyable and active future.
