On this day in 1971, the provisional Bangladesh government in exile named "Mujibnagar Government" was constituted and administered oaths at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur district. The provisional government was formed with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the President, Syed Nazrul Islam as Vice President, Tajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister, Khondokar Mostaque Ahmed, Foreign Minister, Captain M Mansur Ali, Finance Minister and AHM Quamaruzzaman, Home and Relief Minister. This core cabinet that worked as wartime government coordinated the liberation war and worldwide campaign for Bangladesh’s independence and steered the Liberation War to the victory on December 16 1971. The embassy organised a discussion at the Bangabandhu Auditorium of the chancery building on the significance of the formation of the probationary government. Officers of the embassy took part in the discussion saying that the Mujibnagar government in exile provided leadership, unity and direction to the nine-month long guerrilla warfare for independence. They said this government in exile regarded as the first government of independent Bangladesh approved the proclamation of independence by father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman which is the legal and constitutional basis of independent and sovereign Bangladesh. Md Shahabuddin Patwari, Minister (Economic) at the embassy, chaired the discussion participated by Shamim Ahmad, Minister (Press), Brig Gen Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, the Defence Attache, Md Shamsul Alam Chowdhury, Minister (Consular) and Mr. Toufique Hasan, Counsellor (Political-1). Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, First Secretary and HCO conducted the discussion.
