The evening will include a discussion about the MUSICAL GUEST history of the Civil Rights Movement, Viola Liuzzo’s powerful legacy and the future of civil rights ARLAN FEILES protection in our community. musician and lyricist, will offer a powerful FACILITATOR: performance in honor of this lesser-known Gwendolyn Reese, Social Justice Coordinator civil rights hero, entitled “Viola.” Alabama Institute for Social Justice Viola Gregg Liuzzo traveled to Alabama in March 1965 to help the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with its efforts to register African-American voters in Selma. Not long after her arrival, Liuzzo was murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan while driving a black man from Montgomery to Selma. She was the only white female killed during the Civil Rights Movement. MOBILIZING COMMUNITIES AND CREATING PEACE THROUGH RACIAL RECONCILIATION AND HEALING The Alabama Institute for Social Justice’s Racial Healing and Reconciliation Community Learning Forums are intended to promote dialogue and discussion about a variety of racial and social justice subjects, with the objective of promoting healing, enhancing understanding and energizing the community.
