Oct. 1 Paul Short Run no team scoring For the seventh time out of their nine national championships and the first time since 1994, the Oct. 16 Penn State National 1st of 31 Wildcats featured the individual national champion as well. Villanova dominated competition at the BIG EAST and regional meets even while facing stiff competition from a strong field of teams. Leading up to the NCAA Championships, Reid helped lead the team to its third straight conference championship and second consecutive regional title by repeating as the individual champion at both the BIG EAST meet and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The top four runners for the Wildcats all finished in the top seven overall at both the BIG EAST and regional meets and the team has now won its last 10 scored meets since the start of the 2009 campaign. Reid has been the individual champion at eight of those meets and this year also won the Penn State National en route to sweeping the three postseason competitions. Villanova gained unprecedented exposure for its success this season thanks to a congratulatory advertisement that was a project of BIG EAST sponsor American Eagle Outfitters. Following both the BIG EAST and NCAA Championships, an advertisement for American Eagle with the Wildcats team photo and a congratulatory message was displayed on a 30-story billboard in New York City’s Times Square. The depth on the Villanova roster went well beyond the first five runners. Seniors Callie Hogan and Sarah Morrison were among the top seven runners at nearly every race during the season. Hogan also won an individual title of her own at the Haverford Invitational in October. Freshman Nicky Akande enjoyed a strong collegiate dbeut for the Wildcats and the team also received contributions from senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan and the sophomore trio of Shannon Browne, Anna Francis and Meghan Smith. In addition to the team’s racing success, the Wildcats continue to flourish off the course as well. Reid was named the Academic All-Area Performer of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer and both Marino and Ali Smith joined her as members of the Academic All-Area squad. The academic accolades are also nothing new for the women’s cross country team, which has boasted the best composite GPA out of the 24 varsity teams at Villanova in each of the last three years.
