St Cuthbert In 634 AD, Cuthbert was born in the Lammermuir Hills near the border between Scotland and England. As a boy he worked as a shepherd. One night in 651 he saw a great light in the sky. On that same night, Bishop Aidan of Lindisfarne, died. Cuthbert believed the light was God calling him to be his servant and so he became a monk. Cuthbert travelled all over Northumbria teaching people how to live good lives and healing people. He was loved for his kindness and generosity. One day he met a poor boy who was hungry. Cuthbert pointed to an eagle above them. "God has sent the eagle to help us,'' he said. When the eagle flew down to the water, Cuthbert said, "Run and see what the Lord has sent us". The boy found a fish and took it. Cuthbert asked him, "Why have you not given our servant her share?” He told the boy to cut the fish in half, and give half to the eagle. In 664 Cuthbert was invited to be the Prior of Lindisfarne. This meant that he was in charge of running the Abbey. In 676 Cuthbert retired to live in a little cave on one of the Farne Islands. He liked to spend time praying and being with nature. He died there in 687 and was buried at Lindisfarne. In 698, the Vikings raided Lindisfarne. The monks of Lindisfarne fled with Cuthbert’s remains. They carried them from place to place for safety. St Cuthbert was finally laid to rest in Durham in 996.
