Care is required on the final short steep ascent. ESCAPE ROUTE 1 - Exits from a col between Causey Stoneycroft /Stair. [Grid Ref: 2° + 2.2 - Exit down a well defined path to your right (bearing = 2°) on a col just BEFORE the very obvious zig-zag path (17 bends) going up to Sail. Head down the Pike and Sail [Exits from Grid Ref: 204205] 232214] valley via Stoneycroft Gill returning to Stair near Braithwaite in a generally NE then E direction. 1 CAUSEY PIKE [219209] Sail (773m) 310° 1.6 3.6 Easy walking via Scar Crags and then up the very obvious zig-zag path (17 bends). As the path levels out, the summit is 10m to the right of the path with a small cairn on top. Continue along the obvious path towards Crag Hill. 2 SAIL [198203] Crag Hill (839m) 274° 0.4 4.0 Well defined path up to Crag Hill via The Scar. Crag Hill has a Trig point on the summit. ESCAPE ROUTE 2 - Exits from a col approx. 0.5 mile Lanthwaite Green Farm. [Grid 230° + 2.9 - Head down main path from Crag Hill (bearing = 230°) then exit on the col (approx. 0.5 mile beyond summit) by turning right (bearing = 8°) off the main SW beyond summit of Crag Hill [Exits from Grid Ref: Ref: 159208] path along another well defined path. Do NOT continue straight ahead up to Grasmoor! Route goes via Gasgale Gill to Lanthwaite Green Farm in a 186202 - indicated on OS map with a height ref of generally N then W direction. 722m] 3 CRAG HILL [193204] Wandope (772m) 230° 0.6 4.6 Descend from Crag Hill on the main path, for a distance of approx. 150m. At a small ridge (gulley) running across the path just before a cairn, head off this path in a due S direction for 10m or so to a narrow path. Turn right on this path which leads around the top lip of a steep bowl on your left hand side. Gradually descend via this path in a generally SW then S direction before the gentle ascent to Wandope. 4 WANDOPE [188197] Whiteless Pike (660m) 258° 0.8 5.4 From the cairn on the peak, follow the most obvious path on a bearing of 258° that leads to the upper end of Whiteless Edge. From here an easy descent and obvious path to Whiteless Pike via Whiteless Edge. 5 WHITELESS PIKE [180190] Buttermere (115m) 240° 1.7 7.1 Descend along easy paths. At the road at the bottom, turn left into Buttermere village. Public toilets in car park. BUTTERMERE [175170] (5in5 Start) High Snockrigg (526m) 65° 1.3 8.4 From Buttermere village, begin ascent by initially walking E, then up the road of Newlands Pass (bearing = 65° at junction). Continue up Pass for approx. 0.25 mile (past the chapel), then take footpath on right (bearing = 75°). For the summit, at the top of steep ascent, turn right (bearing = 190°). 6 HIGH SNOCKRIGG [187169] Robinson (737m) 95° 1.1 9.5 Very boggy and wet on Buttermere Moss (the plateau on High Snockrigg). Once over this, follow obvious path up to Robinson. 7 ROBINSON [202169] Dale Head (753m) 205° 1.9 11.4 Good path via Littledale Edge and Hindsgarth Edge. ESCAPE ROUTE 3 - Exits from top of Dale Head [Exits Honister Hause (YHA and 170° + 1.1 - Head down a well defined path to the top of Honister Pass (YHA, Honister Slate Mines) in a generally S direction. from Grid Ref: 223153] Honister Mines). [Grid Ref: 225135] 8 DALE HEAD [223153] High Spy (650m) 80° 1.4 12.8 Via Dalehead Tarn. From Tarn, find path over wall (bearing approx. 50°) to head up clear path to High Spy (with a large cairn on summit). 9 HIGH SPY [234162] Maiden Moor (576m) 14° 1.4 14.2 Clear well defined path along tops. NOTE: Approx. 1 mile after High Spy summit the path forks; be sure to take the left hand fork (bearing = 355°), with the fell edge on your immediate left (NOT the more obvious right hand path with a bearing of 38°) to get to summit of Maiden Moor. 10 MAIDEN MOOR [237182] 10in10 FINISH - Swinside Inn 44° 3.0 17.2 Descend into Newlands Valley from the col before the ascent to Catbells. Follow good paths to Skelgill. On reaching the tarmac lane, turn left through the (110m) [243218] gate then along lanes to return to Swinside Inn. Above information to be used as a guide only.
