City support 1. City background WHY BARCELONA Barcelona is a compact city, neither too small nor too big, which makes it very welcoming and gives it a cosy atmosphere. It boasts significant cultural, social and commercial diversity. Barcelona displays the characteristics of Mediterranean cities: it is dynamic and open, inviting for leisure activities, walking through and enjoying. It is the only large city in Europe that boasts 5 kilometres of beaches in the city itself. Barcelona enjoys a very agreeable and mild climate year-round. Barcelona has over 2000 years of history and conserves important testimonies of its past. Barcelona offers a very intense cultural life: Opera, Ballet, Concert, Theatres, festivals, expositions, museums... Barcelona is a top “gourmet city” with a cuisine style based on creativity. Furthermore, Mediterranean cuisine, considered by many as the healthiest in the world, is used even in the simplest restaurants. Catalonia has always been host to famous people in the Avant-garde movement in Europe: Picasso, Miró, Dali, Gaudi are just some of the many examples of the constant desire for renovation and creation, a true quality that is also present in today’s Catalan artists like its architects or designers. 1. City background WHY BARCELONA Barcelona has an excellent network of flights specially to Spanish and European cities. Its international airport is only 16 kilometres south of the city and is also known as Barcelona-El Prat. Barcelona offers a variety of places to organise large and small meetings. It also has a wide range of historical charming venues - ideal for banquets, cocktails, exhibitions and products presentations- in modern and fully- equipped facilities. Its stock of hotels is abundant and modern. Catalans are hardworking and reliable people. Throughout their history they have shown their capacity to organise successful events with precision, creativity and efficiency. City background WHY BARCELONA Barcelona, the first city in the world to be awarded the Biosphere World Class Destination certification reflecting its commitment to sustainability. BIOSPHERE is a private certification process promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute, an independent body sponsored by UNESCO and recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), an organization that is promoted by the WTO (World Tourism Organization), amongst others, and which encourages the implementation of sustainable practices in the tourism industry. Unlike other certification requirements, BIOSPHERE goes beyond environmental issues, covering aspects such as the provision of quality services, the conservation of cultural heritage, the social and economic development of the local community and visitor satisfaction. Barcelona’s leading position as a benchmark destination in this field means there is a wide variety of resources available to host congresses and events that are committed to sustainability. 1. City background WHY BARCELONA Meeting facilities & venues Barcelona has lots of amazing and unique venues that are strongly committed to sustainability, having implemented best practices in the field of social responsibility, promoting energy-efficiency measures and savings, investing in waste management and CO2 emissions compensation. Accommodation and restaurants In recent years, the private sector has made a firm commitment to introducing social responsibility in the management of hotels and restaurants. Some of the best practices that have been implemented showing this commitment include the recruitment of staff with physical or mental disabilities, purchasing local, quality products and the incorporation of measures to reduce waste production. Accessibility The city has many fully-adapted transportation options, hotels without physical barriers, accessible beaches and visits offering sign language services, which facilitate stays in Barcelona for anyone with a disability. Transport within the City Barcelona is an easy city for getting around. According to the European Cities Monitor Report 2012, it has the sixth- best internal transport system in Europe. Its local metro and bus systems cover the whole city with frequent and comfortable services. But Barcelona is also a compact city, meaning that much of the time delegates can walk to where they want to get to. 3. Transport within the City Barcelona is an easy city for getting around. There’s also an advanced system of safe cycle tracks crisscrossing town, and thanks to the great climate, cycling is a favorite means of local transport. Rush hour traffic concentrates in the early morning and evening mainly due to those commuting, although the city’s ring roads have cut a significant amount of traffic from the inner city. The city has a convenient and efficient public transport network; buses, metro, train, tram and suburban rail (FGC) Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), provides two transport networks: bus and metro. The Barcelona metro consists of eight lines, 140 stations and over 130 rush hour trains. It operates over long hours every day throughout the city and to several municipalities in the metropolitan area. Operating hours are: Weekdays (Monday to Thursday) and public holidays: from 5.00 am to 12.00 midnight Fridays and eves of public holidays: from 5.00 am to 2.00 am Saturdays and eves of 1 January, 24 June, 15 August and 24 September: opens at 5.00 am, then continuous service Sundays: continuous service until midnight Barcelona bus operates a fleet of over 1.000 buses, 70% of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility. Tram, Barcelona’s tramway system is an accessible, environmentally friendly, fast and comfortable system. It consists of two sections; the Diagonal Baix Llobregat and the Ciutadella-Besos (CCIB area) Barcelona has also an extensive network of commuter trains, operated by RENFE the Spanish National Railway Company, which depart from main stations every five or ten minutes. The train’s ability provides comfortable and rapid access to the city centre from the outskirts of the city. 3. Transport within the City Barcelona is an easy city for getting around. 3. Transport within the City Barcelona transport Integrated Fare System makes it possible to use the different modes of transport (Underground, bus, tram, FGC and Renfe) in the same journey within the Metropolitan Region The Public Transport Company (TMB) offers discounts for congress organisers, up to 70% discount of the full rate, tickets of 2, 3, 4 and 5 days. Proposed congress venue CCIB, Barcelona International Convention Center The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) begins life with the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and its aim is to continue with the same values of dialogue, meeting and exchange that the city of Barcelona offered during this event.
