Objective (Students will…) Trace the evolution of Greek government from kingdom to democracy. City-states were independent. Each city-state and its people had to pick the government that worked for them. Each city state had its own twist on government. Some city-states kept their government for centuries. Other changed as times and people changed. Monarchy is the earliest form of government in Greece. Monarchy is ruling with a king or queen (Egypt). They have supreme power. Most city-states started monarchy's but many will change. Aristocracy is another form of government. Nobility = people who were born of “high-born” (important) ancestors. Sometimes claiming their ancestors were mythological. Corinth (city-state) was a Aristocracy monarchy then became an A government ruled by the upper aristocracy. class or nobility Most city-states will transition Supreme away from monarchy. Greatest in power or authority Another form of government was an oligarchy. “rule by the few” Similar to aristocracy (small group). Difference in how people get the power to rule. Aristocracy = inherited class Oligarchy = wealth/landownership Some city-states replaced their aristocracy with an oligarchy. Sometimes they combined power Aristocrats and oligarchs share both rule (share power). Oligarchy A government ruled by a few powerful individual. Poor people excluded from all governments (monarchy, aristocracy & oligarchy). Poor would often resent those in power. Sometimes they even rebelled.
