The FMG journal Foundations has been published twice yearly since 2003 in both printed and web-based formats. Further details are available on our website (http://fmg.ac/) or from the address printed inside the cover. This index to Volume 2 covers six issues published between 2006 and 2008 and follows a format similar to that for Volume 1, published in 2005. It is in five sections, the largest being the index to people. The complete Table of Contents to Vol.2 is also provided. As before, the following conventions have been followed. Although the principle of indexing by surname has been followed, this is not applicable in many cases to medieval names, and geographical or other descriptors have been used where available. In many cases prepositions or articles (of, de, le, la) have been omitted. Where included, the preposition follows the main index term (eg “Hay, David de”). Nobility are indexed by the family name where given in the article (“Clare, Gilbert de, Earl of Gloucester”) or otherwise by the geographical element of their title (“Cornwall, Edmund, Earl of”). Royalty, clerics and a few other cases are indexed by their personal/Christian name (“Edward III, King of England”; “Alexander the Great”). Complete consistency is difficult to achieve and the compiler apologises for any confusion. In the Index of Places, British locations are identified where possible with the three letter “Chapman” county code. These codes are widely used and may be found on a number of Internet sites or in general reference works on British genealogy. Foundations Vol.2 was published in 6 parts, but as the page sequence was continuous no reference is given in the index to individual part numbers. They may be referenced as follows: Part 1: pages 1-88; Part 2: 89-168; Part 3: 169-216; Part 4: 217-304; Part 5: 305-388; Part 6: 389-476. -478- FOUNDATIONS INDEX TABLE OF CONTENTS Volume 2, Number 1 The Charles F H Evans Award: announcement of the winning entry 2 FMG News 2 Royal Genealogy and the Gothic Thesis in Medieval Iberian Historiography (Andrew Devereux) 3 Some Internet Resources for Medieval Genealogy (Chris Phillips) 27 The Political Role of Solomon, the Exilarch, c.715-759 CE (part 1) (David H Kelley) 29 Thomas Ellis, Gentleman and Merchant, Alderman and Mayor of Doncaster (John M Ellis) 47 Call for Entries for the 2006 “Charles F H Evans Award” 53 The Five Odards: Their role in Northern England and Scotland in the 12th Century and some of their Descendants (MichaelAnne Guido) 54 A Vignette of the Family of Chiche of Canterbury and Other Parts of Kent (Kenneth W Jacob) 74 Abbreviations for Commonly Cited Sources 88 Volume 2, Number 2 FMG News 90 Call for Entries for the 2006 “Charles F H Evans Award” 90 Love Matches and Contracted Misery: Thomas of Brotherton and his Daughters (Part 1) (Brad Verity) 91 Nes Fitz William and the Earls of Fife: The origin of the house of Fife 962-1129 (MichaelAnne Guido) 112 The Ancestry of the Ellis family of Kiddal Hall in the Parish of Barwick-in-Elmet in the West Riding of the County of York (John M Ellis) 135 The Political Role of Solomon, the Exilarch, c.715-759 CE (part 2) (David H Kelley) 140 Monomachos, Tornikes and an uncharted Caucasian ancestry (Stanford Mōmmaerts-Browne) 158 Some Internet Resources for Medieval Genealogy: 8 (Chris Phillips) 163 The FMG Library: Recent acquisitions 164 Medieval Lands: A prosopography of medieval European noble and royal families (Charles Cawley) 165 Volume 2, Number 3 The Charles F H Evans Award: announcement of the winning entry 170 FMG News 170 A Genealogy of the Grand Komnenoi of Trebizond (Kelsey Jackson Williams) 171 Dukes of Normandy: help requested (Thierry le Hête) 189 Empire of Trebizond: background note 190 Some Internet Resources for Medieval Genealogy: 9 (Chris Phillips) 191 Who was Malcolm, King of the Cumbrians?
