The Problem the Need the Solution Growth Mindset

THE PROBLEM Common goals, objectives, language and marketing are needed to create unity across LPU and LPU-VA as it pertains to LPU graduate outcomes, preparedness, and employability. THE NEED Research and student body feedback reveal the need to better prepare this generation of students for success in work environments, internships, residencies, and jobs. Top five reasons new hires fail mainly have to do with life skills: Coachability - 26%, Emotional Intelligence - 23%, Motivation - 17%, Temperament - 15%, and lastly, Technical Competence - 11%. THE SOLUTION Establishing a framework to guide efforts based on research and the needs of student graduates. These will be woven throughout curriculum, events, career development, co-curricular workshops and more. The framework includes the development of the following four key leadership areas: GROWTH MINDSET A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence can be developed. Students with a growth mindset understand they can get smarter through hard work, the use of effective strategies, and help from others when needed. This includes motivation, grit and resilience. It is contrasted with a fixed mindset: the belief that intelligence is a fixed trait that is set in stone at birth. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Emotional intelligence or EI is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and those of the people around you. Dr. Daniel Goleman, American psychologist identifies the five key elements of Emotional Intelligence: Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy, and Social skills. The more that you, as a leader, manage each of these areas, the higher your emotional intelligence. SOFT SKILLS Students can gain “hard skills” at LPU through academic work, but the goal is to integrate those with “soft skills” - personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. The list is long, but can include things like, communication, creative thinking, time-management, flexibility, networking, conflict resolution, critical thinking, etc. COACHABILITY Coachability embodies humility and motivation - it means that a person is receptive to feedback, to receiving constructive criticism, and will use that feedback and constructive criticism to improve her or his workplace performance. LIFE SKILLS • Self-Awareness • Decision Making • Coping with Stress • Empathy • Problem Solving • Coping with Emotions • Critical Thinking • Effective Communication • Creative Thinking • Inter-Personal Relationship.
