SERVIRSupporttoNSDI EffortsinMesoamerica,Africa andtheHimalayas GlobalEarthObservationSystemofSystemsforAmericas September25th,2014 TheSERVIRProject • SERVIRisajointeffortbetweenNASA,USAIDtobuildorimprovecapacities indevelopingregionstohelpadaptationtoclimatechangebytaking advantageofEarthObservationdatafordecisionmaking. • Theprojectbeganin2004,inMesoamerica,partneringwiththeCentral AmericanCommissionforEnvironmentandDevelopment(CCAD),theWorld BankandCATHALAC.CATHALAC,locatedinPanama,servesastheregional hubforMesoamericasince2005. • Twoadditionalregionalhubshavebeenestablished(inEasters&Western Africa– atRCMRD,Kenya,andTheHimalayas– atICIMOD,Nepal),andtwo moreregionalhubsaresoontobelaunched. SERVIRRegionalHubs 2nd RegionalGeospatialTechnology ApplicationSymposium,2010 SERVIR&AfricanMonitoringoftheEnvironmentfor SustainableDevelopment(AMESD)MOU,2009 SERVIRHimalayaLaunch,2010 SERVIRAppliedScienceTeams(AST) • In2011NASA’sEarthScienceDivision’sAppliedSciencesProgram,issueda solicitationforResearchOpportunitiesforSpaceandEarthSciences(ROSES) tosupporttheSERVIRProject.Ageracompetitiveprocess,11proposals wereselected,asfouryearfundedeffortstoaddressidentifiedenduser needsinSERVIRhubregions. • TheSERVIRASTconsistsofthe11principalinvestigatorsforthoseprojects, targetedtowardabalancedvarietyofthemesacrossSBA’s,suchaswater, agriculture,disasters,climate,andpublichealth. • ThesePIsarecollaboratingnotonlywiththeSERVIRregionalhubson projectsofspecialbenefittotheirregions,butalsowiththeCoordination Officeontigerteamsasnewandpressingneedsareidentified. SERVIRDemandTeam • TheSERVIRDemandTeamiscomposedofinternational developmentexpertsfromDAI. • TheDemandTeamhelpsgrowthelocalimpactofSERVIR's geospatialproductsandapplicationsintheregions. • DAIworkstoincreasedemandforSERVIRtoolsandservices, evaluatedevelopmentimpactsofselectedproducts, contributetoSERVIRhubsustainabilityplans,assistUSAID fieldmissionswithnewhubs,andmore. GEO,an intergovernmentalbodycomprisedof 74governments,theEuropeanCommissionand51international organizations,worktogethertobuildtheGlobalEarthObservationSystemofSystems(GEOSS)Infollow uptothepreviousGEOSSoftheAmericasSymposiumheldinSeptember2007inBrazil,thepurposeof thisyear'sSymposiumistoincreaseunderstandingofGEOSSintheregion,raiseawarenessaboutexisting GEOSSintheAmericasactivities,strengthenpartnerships,andadvanceadialogueaboutopportunities, capabilities,andrequirements. Participantsincludeover80scientistsofthehemisphereandfromfiveinstitutionswithspaceprograms suchasNASA,theU.S.NOAA,Canada’sCSA,Brazil’sINPEandCONAEofArgentina.Thecurrent membershipinGEOfromtheAmericasincludes:Argentina,Belize,Brazil,Canada,Chile,CostaRica, Honduras,Mexico,Panama,Paraguay,andtheUnitedStates.TheonlyprototypesystemintheGEOSS AmericaswasestablishedinPanamain2005.Thissystem,knownasSERVIR(RegionalofVisualizationand MonitoringSystem)isoperatedbytheWaterCenterfortheHumidTropicsofLatinAmericaandthe Caribbean(CATHALAC,Spanishacronym)intheCityofKnowledge,Clayton.
