
CORN SITUATION IN MIMAROPA OCTOBER TO DECEMBER 2019 Date of Release: 14 February 2020 Reference No. 2020-085 MIMAROPA CONTRIBUTES 0.8 PERCENT TO THE COUNTRY’S TOTAL CORN PRODUCTION IN THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2019 Total volume of corn production in the MIMAROPA Region was estimated at about 12,654 metric tons in October-December 2019. The region ranked fourteenth among 16 corn producing regions in the country. Figure 1. Occidental Mindoro followed with 4,440 metric tons or 35.1 percent, while Oriental Mindoro posted a total of 2,008 metric tons or 15.9 percent of the total corn production in the region. Romblon and Marinduque lagged behind with a combined share of 4.8 percent or a total of 605 metric tons of corn. Figure 3. Corns produced in Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, and Occidental Mindoro were predominantly yellow with the corresponding share of 95.3 percent, 68.7 percent, and 58.6 percent to the total corn production in the ir respective provinces. Meanwhile, corns produced in Marinduque and Romblon were predominantly white with 78.4 percent and 95.0 percent share to the regional corn production in their respective province. The increase in corn production was due to the boosts in the production lead by O ccidental Mindoro with 438 metric tons or 10.9 percent higher than 4,002 metric tons during October -December 2018. Meanwhile, the production of white corn boosted from 2,958 metric tons to 4,219 metric tons or about 42.6 percent higher compared to the same period of 2018. Figure 6. This decline was due to the cutback of 359 hectares or 16.8 percent in Palawan’s total area harvested from 2,138 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2018 down to 1,779 in same period in 2019. Figure 7. This was 13.1 percent or 353 hectares lower than the total area harvested of 2,702 hectares in the same period last year. In contrast, white corn’s total area harvested of 1,862 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2019 posted a 22.3 percent or 340 hectares from 1,522 hectares in the same period last year. Figure 8. It was followed by Palawan and Oriental Mindoro with 3. 1 metric tons per hectare and 3.0 metric tons per hectare , respectively. The yield of these provinces exceeded the regional average yield. Meanwhile, Marinduque showed an increase in yield by 5.1 percent or 0.1 metric tons per hectare from 1.4 metric tons per hectare during fourth quarter of 2018 to 1.5 metric tons per hectare of the same period in 2019. In contrast, the decline on the average corn yield was observed in the provinces of Oriental Mindoro and Romblon. Corn yield production in Oriental Mindoro declined by 1.6 percent or 0.05 metric tons lower than its corn yield production of 3.05 metric tons per hectare in the same quarter of 2018. Romblon incurred a decrease of 9.4 percent or 0.2 metric tons per hectare from its corn yield of 1.9 metric tons per hectare in the fourth quarter of 2018. Table 1.
